Last weekend, I was in Atlantic City with my family to get away. The hotel where we were staying was hosting a interactive murder mystery show. I love those kinds of shows, so we got tickets. The show was called, “Beach Ball Butcher” and it was just as campy as it sounds.

If you have never seen one of these weird stepchildren of the theatre world, it can be quite fun. They all begin with a story where at one character dies by the end of Act I. After Act I, the audience goes to “interrogate” the characters with usually the “murdered” actors playing a twin. You are given questions to ask each of the characters and each person tells some slightly long-winded story before giving you the answer. You then use the clues you receive to determine the killer. Once you have all the clues and have chosen your pick for the murderer, you turn in your papers to hopefully be the winner. Following the “interrogation” break, you go back into the theatre for Act II where the solution is revealed including why the wrong choices are wrong. If only one person gets to the solution correct, they win the prize. Usually multiple people guess correctly so the winner is drawn randomly from all correct entries.

Being this is the 21st century, you could play the game the traditional way with pencil and paper or download the show’s app and play on your phone. On the app, you were given multiple choice answers for the character questions and you had to take a photo in front of one those mug shot height chart backgrounds before you could guess the murderer. What was weird was the app would not accept wrong answers, so you could pick until you got the correct answer which rendered talking to people meaningless since you could just pick each choice until you got the correct answer. This was also was a marked advantage over the people using pencil and paper.

Even though I am a very competitive person, I was happy not win when I found what the prizes was: a tote bag, some casino cash, a water bottle and taking a picture with the cast. I am not sure what they do with the pictures people upload from the game. I hope I don’t appear on website somewhere.

All in all, it was a fun night. Do you enjoy murder mystery theater? Have you ever won one?
