I have been concerned by many on the left, with the bloody brutal war on Ukraine dragging on, the President Zelenski and his government should to be made to negotiate concessions to the Russian war machine.
As a socialist and internationalist, I find these comments from people who would otherwise be my comrades, disheartening.
Those calling for diplomacy need to understand that it means nothing without adressing first the willingness of the sides to the agreement to respect the agreement and to offer concrete concessions, which considering Russia what's to overrun Ukraine, is a little difficult right now.
For instance, look at the agreement to resume grain exports that was recently signed in Istanbul. Russia violated that agreement one day after signing by bombing the Odessa ports with its cruis missiles.
What possible concessions can be offered other than national suicide?
For Ukrainians, territorial concessions can never be accepted, such an act would be a complete betrayal of their fellow Ukrainians living in the occupied zones and subject to a brutal Russian-client regime in that region.
It would be very dangerous for the Ukrainian President to give up territory, only then to open the door to more extreme far right politicians whose support will only increase.
The consequences would be even more authoritarianism and a war that would just continue on and on, even inside the occupied territories where a resistance would continue to prevail and the chances of direct attacks on Russian territory even more likely.
I understand the desire to see this war end and, at the beginning, i was also hoping that an indigenous anti-war movement would mushroom in Russia and change the course of the Kremlin. But this has not happened, and will not happen without a military defeat of Russia. And a military defeat of Russia will also be of importance to Russiance herself, who will suffer from a more reactionary, authoritarian Putin regime if he wins any kind of success.
We need to understand that the decision to oppose the Russian invasion was not made in the US or in Europe, but Ukranians themselves rose up to resist the occupier. For us to demand concessions from Ukraine and to remove pressure from Russia is to reject solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
