Our dog Simba on the left. His brother, who we met for the first time this weekend, on the right. Family resemblance much?

Just about six years ago, I penned two diaries two weeks apart. The first was just before K1 headed off for first semester at college, the second was after her first week at school. Four years later I penned a short pre-graduation retrospective, as we prepared to mark the end of undergrad in our pandemic-affected living room Commencement. In Feb 2021 I marked her return to that same University when she decided that even if graduate school was virtual, living in an apartment across from campus was better than living her in childhood bedroom. You joined us for the Pandemic 2020 Replacement Commencement last October, and then for Graduate School Commencement just last May.

By the time you read this, I’ll be in a hotel room in Rochester, NY on a short trip to help K1 pack six years worth of possessions (including two years in the same apartment for graduate school). She’s dealing with a rheumatoid arthritis flare thanks to a ridiculous doctor who cut her treatment regimen because he ‘doesn’t really believe in seronegative RA’, and her appointment with her regular Massachusetts doctor is in two weeks so she’s achy, ouchy, and I’ll get a much-needed workout carrying boxes so she can focus on other things. Then I’ll be home for a week while Mr. Brillig and K2 spend the weekend in Maine for a soccer tournament, and then the following Wednesday Mr. Brillig and I will drive out in one car and return with one of us in our car, K1 in her car, and the other of us in a cargo van full of stuff to be temporarily stored at our house until K1 and her friend find an apartment. It’s an exciting time full of change… the young adult returning to the family nest for a short time is not that college student who left all those years ago.

But I know what really drives viewers to Top Comments diaries, and CUTE PUPPIES definitely do the job! When we adopted Simba, we knew he was part of a litter of puppies that traveled from Houston to Salem, MA. We’d originally gone to the shelter with the image of another pup from that litter in mind, but bonded with and brought home our forever pup. When we did DNA testing and learned our Boxer Mix was really a Pittie/Pyrenees mix, we also found two of his siblings had done testing, and we’ve connected with them. Today his brother visited us for a playdate, and it was amazing. As you can see, they definitely look alike even though Simba weight a few pounds more. I can’t say for certain they remembered one another as littermates, BUT… they played differently than any other dog he’s had playdates with… not once in ninety minutes did either pup try to hump the other, and they licked each other’s mouths a LOT. They seemed to understand there were safe, comfortable, GOOD-smell memories associated with the other, and now they’ve had hours to reconnect (with more planned).

How’s your week going? Have a look at the weekend Tops then let us know in the comments!
