Bite your tongue.

Lindsay is complaining about having to listen to Democrats ‘lecture’ him about climate, saying our solutions are ‘draconian’, and we treat climate change as a ‘religion’. (Ironic, after he helped install a pro-inquisition Court). Graham objects to taking any action before other countries and argues that taking action would destroy our economy.

The first problem is that our country has put more carbon into the atmosphere than any other country, so we have more responsibility for doing more sooner.

Second, switching to renewable energy will create new jobs.

Third, the longer we wait, the more economic damage we will suffer as our climate deteriorates.

Fourth, showing leadership against carbon pollution will help other countries follow.

But inertia is a powerful obstacle to change. Republicans have been able to thwart action on climate with simple arguments, because people are stupid and lazy. (I’ve heard that something like a third or almost half of people are below average intelligence, but I haven’t bothered to check the math).

I think we need to do several things as soon as possible. One is to explain how economically damaging it is to do nothing. Two is to explain that any delay only increases the cost. I forget what number comes next, but another problem is that the extreme heat confuses people. C, we should propose an import tax on carbon intensive goods to keep a level playing field as our country de-carbonizes. Three is to stop being so nice.

Not only should Joe Manchin be pressured until he capitulates, but carbon polluting companies, their investors and states need to be pressured. The former guy proved that Presidents can abuse power for selfish interests with impunity, so why can’t our President penalize polluters and reward innovators to help save life on earth?

Like everyone, I read Miss Manners every day, but something about the end of life on earth makes me think that maybe the time has come to take a more aggressive stance. After all, if the earth becomes a hell-scape, then it might interfere with high tea time, which could lead to the decline of civilization.

Well, I could write more, if I had air conditioning…. Or you could go to my blog: zct.life
