Free-range dragon … with fruit?

For our late Bucket today: Any unexpected sightings out in nature, in your neighborhood?

🌊

THE DAILY BUCKET IS A NATURE REFUGE. WE AMICABLY DISCUSS ANIMALS, WEATHER, CLIMATE, SOIL, PLANTS, WATERS AND NOTE LIFE’S PATTERNS. WE INVITE YOU TO NOTE WHAT YOU ARE SEEING AROUND YOU IN YOUR OWN PART OF THE WORLD, AND TO SHARE YOUR OBSERVATIONS IN THE COMMENTS BELOW. 🍅

The dragon above is watching over the mailbox of some neighbors down the road. Maybe they have mail bandits? Well, a hint is those folks are artists, and occasionally over the past few years a new creature appears to grace their mailbox on this relatively unfrequented road where I live in the PNW islands. Even in the height of tourist season. But we locals really enjoy them.

Still trying to decide what those orange spheres are. Maybe an offering to the tomato goddess? We are always hopeful for ripe tomatoes out here in this cool maritime climate.

Note: this stretch of road is the exact spot where a young Barred Owl landed on Mr O’s head last winter. A connection? A vortex?

🐾

A couple of other cool recent local sightings from my area, via iNaturalist:

Rare on my island

Vanishingly rare! This one is a youngster, a very hopeful sign for this species almost entirely wiped out by the viral Seastar Wasting epidemic of the last decade.

🥗

Unexpected in the sense I was looking for zucchini:

That’s a bumblebee working the gigantic squash flower. Gardens are for more than humans.

🌊

High overcast in the PNW islands today. Light breeze. Temperatures in low 60s.

WHAT’S UP IN NATURE IN YOUR AREA TODAY?
