The barrage of Josh Hawley jokes yesterday was swiftly followed by the stern reminders that we should not be laughing at Nazis.

I get it. We want to make sure people are taking these awful people seriously. If we make them look like a joke, maybe people won’t take them seriously and will underestimate the threat.

But taking their actions (and their potential actions ) seriously and mocking them are not exclusive actions.

In fact, laughing at Nazis is not only fun but effective.

Check out these articles about it:

The best way to fight neo-Nazis is to … laugh?

doing nothing is out: “Sitting home with your virtue does no good,” the SPLC advises. But local Seattle writer David Neiwert, who has been tracking this phenomenon for his well-timed forthcoming book, “Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump,” says it likewise does no good to confront extremism with anger. In fact it’s exactly what they want. “Fascists, you need to understand, are the ultimate psychic vampires,” he writes. “They feed off hate. They want to stoke it as much as possible. They want things to become as violent as possible. They love it when you become violent, and give them martyrs …” if you think that the Left is going to win — hell, if you think anyone is going to win, except violent men — you have another think coming,” Neiwert wrote. “We have to stop feeding them.” Neiwert argues the right course is “a serious dedication to nonviolent action.” And because the right-wing marchers are absurd and yes, deplorable, the action should, most of all, be mocking. Example: In 2005 the National Socialist Movement chapter in the Northwest paraded a dozen or so sieg-heiling brown shirts around the state Capitol steps in Olympia. It was supposedly a recruiting session for the coming “race war,” the group said. But instead of shouting or, worse, attacking, protesters dressed up as Nazi clowns to mimic the rally. Ever seen a Nazi clown goose-stepping? It was like “Springtime for Hitler!” Neiwert says after a time onlookers seemed to forget about the deflated white nationalists entirely: “That was the most striking defeat I’ve ever seen dealt to neo-Nazis.”

Don’t Fight the Fascists. Laugh at Them.

So, in the spirit of laughing at Nazis, here are my favorite Josh Hawley memes from yesterday:

Now onto the good news

Guess who is going to Jail?!?!

This asshole:

Human Garbage Dump Steve Bannon

Steve Bannon tried to fight Congress. In the end, he lost badly.

After just three hours of deliberating behind closed doors on Friday, a jury in the nation’s capital found Steve Bannon guilty of contempt of Congress. Bannon, who was on trial this week for contempt of Congress over his decision to ignore subpoenas related to the Jan. 6 Committee, had promised a fiery trial that would embarrass the government. In the end, he and his legal team didn’t put a single witness on the stand—not even Bannon. The prosecution was able to present the case as an open-and-shut affair, asking jurors to consider the facts: Did Bannon show up for depositions? Did he comply with subpoenas? The answer to those questions were emphatically no, and jurors seemed to agree that the case wasn’t much more complex than that. Although the underlying criminal charge is merely a misdemeanor, the threat of prison time with Bannon’s conviction is a clear warning sign to other Trump associates who refused to testify before the Jan. 6 Committee, like “Green Bay Sweep” co-planner Navarro and former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Why Steve Bannon’s conviction really matters

The conviction of former Trump adviser Steve Bannon for contempt of Congress marks an important moment – not only in holding him individually accountable, but also in bringing to justice those who plotted to undermine the results of the 2020 presidential election. This is the first trial involving a member of former President Donald Trump’s inner circle at the time of the former president’s assault on the 2020 election results. And, on Friday, our legal system called Bannon’s bluff after he defied a subpoena to appear before the January 6 House select committee. Even though Bannon’s conviction is for contempt, rather than for an underlying crime, the principle remains the same. For more than two centuries, America has been a society bound by the rule of law, not the rule of men – and we need to keep it that way.

Democrats are doing great things

Democrats continue to work hard for our country:

Newsom signs California gun bill modeled after Texas abortion law

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday signed a bill into law that allows private citizens to bring civil action against anyone who manufactures, distributes, transports or imports assault weapons or ghost guns, which are banned in the state. California Senate Bill 1327 is modeled after a Texas law that allows private citizens to bring civil litigation against abortion providers or anyone who assists a pregnant person in obtaining an abortion after as early as six weeks of pregnancy. The US Supreme Court in December allowed Texas’ six-week abortion ban to remain in effect, which prompted Newsom, who has been supportive of abortion rights and pro-gun control, to say he was “outraged” by the court’s decision and direct his staff to draft a similar bill to regulate guns. Under the California law, a person would also be able to sue a licensed firearms dealer who “sells, supplies, delivers, or gives possession or control of a firearm” to anyone under 21 years old. It allows citizens to sue for a minimum of $10,000 on each weapon involved, as well as attorney fees.

Biden administration pushes to close the growing cybersecurity workforce gap

The Biden administration is pushing to fill hundreds of thousands of cybersecurity jobs in the United States as part of a bid to close a talent shortage US officials describe as both a national security challenge and an economic opportunity. On Tuesday, the administration announced a multi-agency plan to create hundreds of registered apprenticeship programs with the private sector to flesh out the nation’s cybersecurity workforce. The initiative draws funding from a wider $500 million Commerce Department program known as the Good Jobs Challenge, and will particularly focus on recruiting young people, women and minorities to train and work in the cybersecurity field, said Walsh and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo at a White House event on Tuesday focused on broader cyber workforce issues.

House votes to pass bill guaranteeing access to contraception

The House voted Thursday to pass a bill that would guarantee access to contraception by protecting the right to buy and use contraceptives without government restriction. The final vote was 228-195. Eight Republicans crossed over to vote with Democrats. Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Fred Upton of Michigan, Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, John Katko of New York, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, Maria Salazar of Florida and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois joined all the Democrats in voting for the bill.

New Biden administration rules give pipeline operators more flexibility to combat cyber threats

The Biden administration on Thursday issued updated cybersecurity requirements for big US pipeline operators that give them more flexibility over what cyber defensive measures they can take following a major ransomware attack last year. It was also a galvanizing moment for President Joe Biden, driving home how cybersecurity can be a kitchen-table issue.

Biden is acting on climate change

So President Biden is working around them. On {Wednesday} he traveled to Somerset, Massachusetts, to reiterate that climate change is an emergency and to illustrate that combating it offers us a new, innovative economy. As National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy explained to reporters, until 2017, Somerset was the site of one of the biggest and oldest coal-fired power plants in New England. Now that plant will be making cable to anchor offshore wind turbines. Hoping to bring that innovation to the nation more widely, Biden noted that extreme weather events—wildfires, droughts, hurricanes, and floods—cost the U.S. $145 billion last year alone. They damage our economy and our national security. “As President, I have a responsibility to act with urgency and resolve when our nation faces clear and present danger,” he said today. “And that’s what climate change is about. It is literally, not figuratively, a clear and present danger.” Biden is planning to invest more than $2 billion from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and $385 million from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to help people cool their homes. In early June, Biden used the Defense Production Act to speed up the domestic manufacture of solar equipment. The bipartisan infrastructure law has added $3.1 billion to the mix to weatherize homes and make them more energy efficient, and the American Rescue Plan provided $16 billion to clean up methane leaking from capped oil wells, abandoned when they stopped making money. Biden vowed that addressing the climate crisis would provide good manufacturing jobs, repair supply chains, and clean up the environment. He promised to use the power of the presidency to do what Congress currently is not. “[I]n the coming weeks, I’m going to use the power I have as President to turn these words into formal, official government actions through the appropriate proclamations, executive orders, and regulatory power that a President possesses,” he said. “[W]hen it comes to fighting…climate change, I will not take no for an answer. I will do everything in my power to clean our air and water, protect our people’s health, to win the clean energy future,” he said. “We have an opportunity here.”

With Hard Work, We Can Win in November

It is not going to be easy but we CAN win in November!

Dems seek to drive a post-Roe wedge on social issues — and GOP obliges

About three-fourths of House Republicans voted against all four bills ensuring rights to same-sex marriage and access to contraception and abortion. Congressional Democrats have spent the past week trying to flip the political script on social issues in the aftermath of Roe v. Wade being overturned. While they historically trod gently around same-sex marriage and abortion rights — and Republicans used such issues to appeal to “values voters” — House Democrats have now forced several votes daring Republicans to vote against what have become popular positions. Whether the votes will affect Democrats’ political prospects, Republicans largely gave them what they wanted. They voted overwhelmingly against legislation that would federally enshrine a right to contraception and abortion access. And while 47 Republicans voted for a federal law codifying same-sex marriage — spurring hope that the measure could also pass in the Senate and become law — more than three-fourths of the GOP voted against it. In fact, more than 72 percent of Republicans — 153 out of 211 of them — voted no on all four. And nearly 78 percent didn’t cast one yes vote. (Some missed votes or voted “present.”) Here is a great group working with us: The contraception bill is probably the vote you’re most likely to see in campaign ads this fall, given that access is an overwhelming consensus issue. The diverging approaches on same-sex marriage and contraception, though, reinforce that Democrats were able to turn these into wedge issues that forced some tough votes. Republicans overwhelmingly stood by their base and cast votes that will be easy for Democrats to promote as being against the wishes of a strong majority of Americans.

The FCC has been cracking down on robocalls for a while, but now it’s cracking down on the phone providers the robocallers use.

The Federal Communications Commission announced on Thursday that it was ordering phone companies to block call traffic that the agency believes is part of a massive car warranty robocall operation responsible for 8 billion illegal robocalls since 2018. Or, as FCC chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel put it: “Billions of auto warranty robocalls from a single calling campaign. Billions!” The FCC has been trying for years to stop or at least mitigate illegal robocalls, only to see the number of them increase along with consumers’ irritation. But it appears that those efforts are finally bearing fruit. Not only is the agency trying to take down the robocall campaigns, it’s also finding and going after the businesses that facilitate them. “We are not going to tolerate robocall scammers or those that help make their scams possible. Consumers are out of patience and I’m right there with them,” Rosenworcel added in a statement about last Thursday’s order.

Democrats got what they wanted in Maryland: a Trump-backed GOP nominee for governor

Maryland represents a potential bright spot with a competitive race to determine the successor to Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, who is term-limited. According to the Cook Political Report, Maryland is Democrats’ second-best chance at a pickup for a governor’s office after Massachusetts, where Republican incumbent Gov. Charlie Baker isn’t seeking a third term. On Tuesday, Dan Cox — the GOP candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump and favored by Maryland Democrats — won the GOP nomination over his rival, Kelly Schulz. That’s a relief to Democrats who feared going up against Schulz, who previously served as Hogan’s labor and commerce secretary and who had the bipartisanly popular Hogan’s endorsement.

National average gas price falls below $4.50 a gallon

National gas prices fell below $4.50 per gallon on Tuesday, marking a two-month low, according to AAA. Why it matters: The national average for a gallon of regular hit $4.495 on Tuesday, marking around a 10% decrease from June's peak of over $5 a gallon and giving people a bit of relief at the pump during peak driving season in the U.S. It's the first time the national average for regular gas has slipped below $4.50 since May 16, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

GOP's grassroots money problem

Democrats across the 10 most competitive Senate races are out-raising Republicans by more than $75 million among small-dollar donors — those giving less than $200 — according to an Axios analysis of Federal Election Commission records. A concerted Republican effort to build a small-dollar fundraising apparatus independent of Trump's brand appears to be faltering, while Democrats are building on the massive grassroots financial success they saw in 2020. Zoom in: Even the GOP's best small-dollar performers are being swamped by huge grassroots backing on the other side. Georgia's Herschel Walker raised nearly $8 million in "unitemized" donations through June 30. But Democratic incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock has raked in $14 million in small-dollar money through June.

In Florida, GOP Sen. Marco Rubio has reported nearly $12.7 million in small donations. Democratic challenger Val Demings has more than doubled that small-dollar total. The biggest gap is in Arizona, where Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly's reelection campaign has raised nearly $23 million from small-dollar donors. His top three potential GOP challengers — Blake Masters, Jim Lamon and Mark Brnovich — have cumulatively brought in less than $2 million.

Democrats gain in generic ballot

the generic ballot trend lines appear to be decoupling from President Joe Biden's job approvals by the day. FiveThirtyEight's generic ballot aggregate, for instance, had tightened Thursday to a mere 1-point advantage for Republicans, 44.3%-43.2% n even better news for Democrats, FiveThirtyEight's generic ballot likely overstates the case for Republicans. Look, for example, at the last 10 polls in the outlet’s aggregate: One of them is truly not like the others. The GOP-leaning Rasmussen Reports gives Republicans an 8-point advantage, while every other survey shows either a solid Democratic advantage or a very competitive race.

The 1/6 Commission Brought it (and will keep bringing it)

Why the January 6 hearings could be a game changer

could the hearings, by spotlighting messages from Republicans who accept the election results, help restore faith in the legitimacy of American elections? Our research suggests they can. In a recent experiment, we showed over 2,100 Republican voters several real messages from Republican politicians who have endorsed the legitimacy of the 2020 election results (others saw similar endorsements from Democrats, or no information about the election at all in a neutral “control” condition). We then asked the voters whether they believed that the 2020 election was legitimate – and about their trust and confidence in American elections in general. Voters who saw the Republican messages in our experiment were five percentage points more likely to say that the 2020 election was legitimate than those who saw the Democratic messages or no election messages, and they were six percentage points more likely to say that they trusted the American electoral process. While these effects may seem modest at first glance, they reflect the potential for significant shifts in public opinion.

x NEW: nearly 60% of Americans are paying attention to the hearings, and the percentage of people who believe 1/6 was an insurrection is up NINE POINTS. These hearings ARE changing minds. https://t.co/89HgJBmkrn — Mueller, She Wrote (@MuellerSheWrote) July 21, 2022

Liz Cheney sent a very clear warning to Donald Trump on Thursday night

It was often said during the Trump administration that Cabinet officials and Republican allies were playing to an audience of one: The president of the United States. While Donald Trump may no longer be the president, it was clear on Thursday night that Rep. Liz Cheney, the vice chair of the House select committee investigating January 6, was speaking to that same audience of one. “Doors have opened,” Cheney said. “New subpoenas have been issued and the dam has begun to break.” The message to Trump was simple: We’re coming for you.

Testimony bolsters Hutchinson claims on Trump's Jan. 6 meltdown

Rep. Elaine Luria, a Democratic member of the committee, said investigators also have “evidence from multiple sources regarding an angry exchange in the presidential SUV.” This came on the heels of a recent CNN report that quoted two Secret Service sources who confirmed that Trump “demanded to go to the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and berated his protective detail when he didn’t get his way.”’ there’s nevertheless ample evidence to suggest the then-president, after whipping armed followers into a frenzy with ridiculous lies, desperately wanted to join his mob as it descended on the Capitol — and had a meltdown when that didn’t happen.

Sometimes things move slow, but they move

It took Congress 26 years to do a 180 on marriage equality

Republicans and Democrats are coming together to protect same-sex marriage from the Supreme Court. The Respect for Marriage Act, which safeguards the right to same-sex marriage nationwide, passed the House with bipartisan support earlier this week and now awaits a Senate vote. edit: well, mostly Democratic support but some Republicans In 1996, Republican majorities in the House and Senate sensed a political opening after then-President Bill Clinton failed to allow gay people to openly serve in the military. They were also trying to get ahead of a Hawaii court decision that could have legalized same-sex marriage in that state. Fearing every state might have to recognize same-sex unions, Republicans pushed the Defense of Marriage Act, known as DOMA. It declared marriage as between one man and one woman and allowed states to refuse to recognize marriages. It also withheld federal benefits from married same-sex couples. In 2013, a part of DOMA was found to be unconstitutional. DOMA had broad approval. In 2004, placing anti-gay-marriage amendments on ballots in key states like Ohio was smart politics. It helped George W. Bush win reelection to the White House and the GOP gain seats in the US Senate. Bush endorsed a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. The Democratic candidate, John Kerry, also opposed same-sex marriage at the time. In 2008, even as more in his party began to publicly support marriage equality, Obama continued his opposition. In 2012, following the lead of then-Vice President Biden, Obama officially evolved on the issue and said he now supported marriage equality. It was a big moment. A few years later, in 2015, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide.

At least a dozen of the GOP electors who falsely certified Trump as the victor of the 2020 election in Georgia are now subjects of criminal investigation

Georgia prosecutors investigating potential criminal interference in the 2020 presidential election by Donald Trump and his allies have notified several Republicans who were part of a fake electors scheme that they are “targets” of the probe and could face charges, according to a court document filed Tuesday. The information in the filing provides the latest insight into the fast moving and expanding investigation that’s led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani T. Willis, who requested the convening of a special grand jury earlier this year. Part of the investigation now centers on the 16 Republicans who gathered at the Georgia Capitol on Dec. 14, 2020, as part of an attempt to falsely certify the state’s electoral college votes for former president Donald Trump even though Joe Biden won the state. The group included Georgia Republican Party Chair David J. Shafer, candidate for lieutenant governor Burt Jones, county-level GOP officials, a former state lawmaker and local conservative activists.

Other Good News

Russia and Ukraine agree to release blockaded grain exports

Russia and Ukraine agreed Friday to restart shipments of blockaded grain, in a step toward easing a global crisis that has exposed tens of millions of people, especially in Africa and the Middle East, to the threat of acute hunger, the U.N. secretary general announced. One of the two agreements signed Friday in Istanbul, brokered by the United Nations and aided by Turkey, guarantees the safe passage of commercial ships from the Ukrainian port of Odessa and two other ports, which are currently cut off by a Russian naval blockade. A parallel agreement is supposed to facilitate Russian grain and fertilizer exports, they said.

Biden improving

President Joe Biden’s Covid-19 symptoms “have improved,” his physician said Friday, but the President has taken additional medications to address his temperature and cough. Dr. Kevin O’Connor said in a letter that Biden had a temperature of 99.4 degrees Thursday evening, which was treated with Tylenol. “His temperature has remained normal since then,” O’Connor wrote. Asked again whether any of Biden’s symptoms were getting worse, Jha told CNN, “Nope. As of 10:00 p.m. last night, no. It was the same symptoms, about the same level of mildness.” Biden tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday morning, becoming the second US president to contract the virus during the two-and-a-half year pandemic. In a video posted to Twitter after he tested positive, Biden told Americans that he is “doing well” and that he was continuing to work while in isolation at the White House. Images posted to Twitter also showed that Biden signed the Formula Act into law on Thursday, which suspends tariffs on certain formula products amid the ongoing shortage, and held a call with his national security team on Friday morning. Biden is fully vaccinated and twice boosted, and has been prescribed Paxlovid because his advanced age makes him high-risk for experiencing severe illness. Biden is 79 years old.

Putin’s New Ukraine Strategy Proves He Is Getting Desperate

Putin believes firing missiles into towns across Ukraine will frighten the country into submission—despite the failure of his massive ground invasion. It’s not working. Despite the suffering Ukrainians continue to show the most remarkable resilience. When The Daily Beast arrived on the scene in Vinnytsia on the evening of the strike, the city authorities had already cleared much of the rubble. Residents of civilians’ homes could be seen from the street repairing broken walls and windows. Katya and her colleagues all had brooms and shovels to sweep up the mess in their offices and planned to be back at work the following week. Authorities were carting out the burned-out orange husks of cars on the back of pickup trucks. Instead of forcing Ukrainians into submission, Putin’s terror campaign is hardening their resolve.

Senators announce bipartisan bills to stop candidates from stealing elections

After months of negotiating, a group of senators announced two proposals Wednesday designed to close gaps in federal law and prevent future candidates from stealing elections. The measures — called the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act and the Enhanced Election Security and Protection Act — are led by Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. The bills seek to close loopholes in election law that then-President Donald Trump and his allies tried to exploit to keep him in power despite his defeat in the 2020 election. The first bill would clarify the vice president's role in counting Electoral College votes, raise the bar for members of Congress to object, and try to prevent fake slates of electors from interfering in the process. The second is aimed at protecting election workers.
