Nobel Prize
The color of my skin is whiter than brown. I was born in Costa Rica. My great grandmother was Indian. In between Maya and Inca. My other grandparents were Spaniards from the south of Spain, so there is probably some Arab in there.
Race is confusing sometimes. But I love having had an Indian great grandmother. She was truly a scientist, with no degree. She did not know how to read nor write, but her acquired knowledge of the jungle made her the best midwife then. She knew about herbs and remedies and no women died from childbirth on her watch. I am sure that she knew also about how to induce an abortion safely.
But I am going on a tangent. How can I acknowledge the talent of Tony Morrison, all the fantastic black singers and jazz players, all the black civil rights fighters, all the black scientists, engineers, writers? The wonderful soul food I tasted in Savannah, Georgia without the word black?
White supremacists keep telling us how “white” is superior. Well, it is not. The color of the skin is important. It is part of a human being; it is not the whole identity of a person, but it counts. And it should not be used for discrimination but for equality and pride.
I love Tony Morrison and so many other BLACK geniuses that have made our country better and richer.
Thank-you black people.
