Oregon has a gun problem.

Portland, especially: Portland’s mayor declares state of emergency due to historic levels of gun violence

Mayor Ted Wheeler declared a state of emergency Thursday over the city’s historic levels of gun violence and pledged to spend money and attention to intervene in the lives of those responsible for shootings plaguing the city and those at risk of becoming victims.

Wheeler said the goal is to reduce fatal shootings by 10% over the next two years by increasing community-based interventions.

“I intend to restore the safety of the Portland community,” Wheeler said at a news conference at City Hall. “We will not stop until we bring peace back to those Portland neighborhoods too often caught in the crossfire.”
