U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib and her fellow Squad members will speak at the Redford Theatre in Detroit on Sunday as part of a fundraiser for the progressive superstars. Tickets start at $5 and are available through ActBlue.
The Squad includes Representatives Rashida Tlaib (currently representing Michigan’s 13th congressional district), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.
After the speechifying on Sunday, members of the Squad will join volunteers to canvass in Rashida’s chosen district, Michigan-12.
As we get closer to Sunday, I assume more information about canvassing after the Squad’s event at the Redford Theatre will be available here.
Rashida is well known for her fearless advocacy, meaningful legislation, and direct services programs (). Rashida participates in a lot of activities in her district, and she regularly knocks doors in her district to meet people and find out what they need, even when it is not election season.
Redistricting in Michigan
Due to the redistricting in Michigan, Rashida is running in the 12th Congressional District, although she is serving now in the 13th.
In November 2020, Michigan voters amended the state constitution and created a redistricting commission to fix the previous Republican gerrymandering. That committee completed its work last year and equitably redrew the borders of Michigan’s congressional districts. Michigan also lost one congressional seat. As a consequence, Rashida is running for a seat in the new 12th District which includes Dearborn, Southfield, and part of Detroit. That new district encompasses parts of her previous district, the 13th.

Rashida Tlaib faces a tough reelection campaign. Conservative Democrats, the GQP, and AIPAC have donated more than $1M to her opponents. And Michigan lost a congressional district, so her 13th district shifted westward (she redomiciled).
Michigan’s 13th is a very blue district, so the primary will likely determine who gets elected, and August 2 is the deadline for donations.

A Little Bit About Me
I found out recently that my great uncle, Judge Vincent Brennan, represented Michigan’s 13th Congressional District for one term in the 1920s! The 13th is Rashida’s current district.
In addition, when I was a child, I saw Polyanna (1960) and Son of Flubber (1963) in the Redford Theatre where the Squad will appear on Sunday. The theater is located in northwest Detroit, and it has been lovingly maintained by a group of volunteers.
