Republican politicians are always rabbiting on about “government overregulation” but a lot of the time want to get rid of regulations necessary for public health or the environment to satisfy businessmen who dislike regulations that interfere with profits, even when a particular regulation is necessary to protect the public against harm.

However, I have just run into an extremely stupid regulation that exemplifies the kind of regulations that our Democratic representatives should condemn… as there are no doubt boatloads of employees in various businesses who are annoyed by nonsensical rules. Republican operatives blame Democrats for overregulation and nonsensical rules and I am afraid this smear is sticking all too often.

Here is a nonsensical rule that I bumped into just now. Prescriptions for medications of special needs clients living in group homes in New Jersey must specify the hour at which medications are taken because of Medicaid regulations. Saying “at bedtime” or “with meals” will not do. The regulation is stupid because it is too inflexible. Clients who fall asleep before the stated hour may have to be woken up to receive it, and those who really do need to take the medication at bedtime may be given it hours before they are ready to fall asleep. Clients who happen to eat at a time not coinciding with the stated hour will not take a “with meals” medication at the right time.

We should not allow stupid regulations like this to be associated with the Democratic party.
