Cloaked Science

The use of scientific jargon and community norms to cloak or hide a political, ideological, or financial agenda within the appearance of legitimate scientific research. This may include the use of technical language, difficult-to-understand graphs and charts, or seemingly scientific data presented as empirical evidence to lend credibility to the claims being made. Cloaked science may be seeded onto public preprint servers, in data repositories, journals, or publications with lax review standards, through press releases, or by baiting journalists who may not be able to scrutinize the claims thoroughly. This definition builds upon Jessie Daniel's research on cloaked websites, which she describes as "sites published by individuals or groups who conceal authorship in order to disguise deliberately a hidden political agenda,"1 and is inspired by Sarah Richards

Then come the top talking points.

1) The Dobbs decision means that the American people are able to decide the issue of abortion through their elected officials in the states and in Congress. It does NOT mean a nationwide ban on abortion.

2) Hammer Democrats for their extremist position in favor of abortion on demand, even painful late-term abortions when the child can feel excruciating pain.

Don’t get me started on their extremist partial-birth abortion fantasies, or ignoring the pain of a pregnant woman whose fetus is dying and killing her in the process, or the inevitable disasters of ectopic pregnancies that may not be removed or a pregnant woman with cancer who may not be treated, again guaranteeing that both mother and fetus will die.

3) Focus on the humanity of the unborn child as revealed by milestones in his or her development – all rooted in modern [bogus] medicine and science.

Nobody on our side denies that it is horrible when a living fetus can kill its mother, and one must choose between them or let both die. We just deny that it is Pro-Life to insist that both die, as has happened in Ireland and Poland, and was threatened in Malta.

Let the other side come back to us when they invent a technology for doing a Caesarean, and then implanting the fetus in an artificial uterus or a (volunteer or paid) surrogate mother. Even then, there will be cases of a fetus that cannot survive with the most heroic interventions, or will be born brain-dead.

4) Demonstrate that the pro-life movement cares not only about the unborn child, but about the mother as well and providing the resources necessary for her to choose life.

Fine. Show me one such self-proclaimed Pro-Life person actually supporting prenatal and other healthcare for mothers, fetuses, and babies, baby formula when necessary, child care, education, and the rest. I’ll wait.

I well pass over the “hostile questions” and bogus answers recommended, such as the claim that nobody is criminalizing treatment for ectopic pregnancies, and the organization’s training videos. I don’t want to get that angry.

The sense of touch starts in the lips at about 8 weeks.

Fetuses do not sense pain until after 30 weeks.

All of this follows the Christopher Columbus fallacy. He was correct that the Earth is round, but he ignored the actual measurement of its size by Eratosthenes, and selected the smallest size anyone in his time had put forward. The result was that the Americas, including the Caribbean islands, were where he predicted China would be. He never figured it out.
