I know this community on balance prefers to look on the “bright side” of the consistently worsening health and viability of our Democracy. “Just get out the vote!” I feel that it must be said though that this can’t truly be perceived as the helpful by itself. We need to be honest with ourselves, and to take genuine stock of our circumstances, to truly grasp what is needed if there is any hope in turning the tsunami of Trump-style Fascism that we at present are floating in up to our necks.

Rachel Maddow shared details regarding a DOJ memo last night.

www.msn.com/...

It in essence makes it clear that the worst fears regarding why there is corpse-like lethargy regarding the speed of any type of investigation of Trump Crimes Inc. and Jan 6th. Namely, “We don’t want to appear political...”. Sound familiar? It should.

If you’re thinking that “Maybe we just need to stay level headed here, and not get out ahead of our skis...”, or “Just give Mr. Garland more time. He’s working a masterful yet quiet plan that will surely bring forth a wave of legal justice that will show we’re really a nation of laws...”, or “Ignore all the negative stuff, just brow beat nay-sayers and negative perspectives and get our people out to VOTE!” you’re not helping. Really.

I could rage and plead as I’ve done in recent weeks on various post that it is later than we think, and that we aren’t nearly as incensed, furious or apoplectic enough. I’m too emotionally tired to do that any more.

Vote-vote-vote, vote harder, and vote with more feeling is not going to do it alone. Putting your hope in this Jan 6th committee is very thin, mythic soup in light of the DOJ memo. And all we’ve done for several decades now is cope with geriatric leadership that is uninspired, gives lip service to progressive and liberal values and set backs, and shrugs in the light of ruthless gamesmanship and hard edged winner-take all tactics. Vote, hope, and cope are not going to save us.

Our party leadership is too nice, too invested in the cordiality and propriety of public and private political works. If senator Manchin knew that our leadership was truly politically ruthless, and would have snatched his committee chairmanship, and that Biden would use the Bully Pulpit to punish him into an absolute pariah in the party the moment he sabotaged Build Back Better, maybe we’d be further along.

What do we do now? Garland is not going to prosecute Trump. Period. At its root, that means we have no rule of law, because laws don’t really apply when broken. We, at present, as a country are likened to a ship that has a huge, smoking hole in the hull shaped like an attempted governmental coup. Fascism is flowing in, and we’re sinking fast. It’s not getting repaired, only reported ala Jan 6th committee. What do we do before the Christo-Fascist Nazi Death Squads start hunting down LGBTQ, brown and black people, and women looking for healthcare / abortion? Before we have 450 mph hurricanes blowing in from the Atlantic, and ultra-droughts that become famines due to unchecked climate abuse?

Biden and Democratic leadership need to be pushed harder than they’ve ever, ever, ever been pushed to use ALL THE LEVERS at their disposal, and not ask stupid questions like “What happens when the Republicans take over?” It’s too late for that. It might be too late period.
