The Economist opines -- cover of current edition
This one paragraph from the leader on the cover pretty much says it all.
Fringe and sometimes dotty ideas have crept into Democratic rhetoric, peaking in the feverish summer of 2020 with a movement to “defund the police”, abolish immigration enforcement, shun capitalism, relabel women as birthing people and inject “anti-racism” into the classroom. If the Democrats are defined by their most extreme and least popular ideas, they will be handing a winning agenda of culture-war grievance to an opposition party that has yet to purge itself of the poison that makes Mr Trump unfit for office. [Emphasis added]
Leave it to the Brits. “Dotty” indeed.
The whole piece, and the rest of the issue is worth reading for any thoughtful blue. Behind a paywall, sadly. Or just browse it in print at your local bookstore or library … or hack the HTML.
And, yes, yes, I know The Economist’s editorial band of the political spectrum is a little too “liberal” for much of the DK community. It’s still arguably the most globally influential English language publication. Has to take its share of the blame for WEF/Globalization 1.0, the resulting Elephant Curve that brought on the rebellion of the First World Have Nots, who turned in their rage and despair to the cheap opiate of illiberalism.
Park that for now. They’re on our side.
In this case, we ignore the warning at our peril. November will be here sooner than you think.
