Over the weekend I mentioned something, I don’t remember what, to Mr. Brillig and he responded with a link to a music video I hadn’t yet seen (even though it came out in February of this year). Somehow it was relevant, in that way people who’ve known each other for 35 years can make happen. As it happens I’m a big fan of Playing For Change, and in early 2021 shared the PFC/Peter Gabriel release of Biko. The video Mr. Brillig shared with me was another PFC version of a song I know well: When The Levee Breaks, which I know as a song from 1971’s Led Zeppelin IV. Have a listen, then let’s talk :)

What I didn’t know until today was that the Led Zeppelin version was a reworking of a song first recorded in 1929 by Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie. It was inspired by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin said in a Rolling Stone interview:
“It seems that little has changed since 1927, or even 2005 with [Hurricane] Katrina,” he says. “It’s still a really powerful track, both musically and lyrically.”
