Bread: A Love Story [1]

My grandmother, dad's mom, was a farm girl from central Wisconsin. She married, and they moved to the outskirts of Chicago, as my grandfather worked on the railroad; 50 years -- Soo Line. Well she would bake four loaves at a time, and just being there in the kitchen helping -- she had a way with kids (we loved her) gosh I learned a lot. Although I didn't exactly know it at the time, making and baking bread -- one loaf for us, one for dinner, two carefully saved away -- and butter melting on thick slices when the breadloaf was sliced...was an important part of my life, something so simple.

My love of bread hasn't meant bologna on white with mayo and lettuce fails the perfection test. Laughing Cow cream cheese on potato bread, shared, remains an intimacy. Rye bread, and here my standards are merciless, has the power to make everything right.
