2:02 am, another BOOM! I grabbed my flashlight and cell phone and stomped out of the garage into the driveway. I smelled smoke and heard a commotion from the neighbor’s house (not the one I usually have trouble with). I saw a fire (not a huge blaze) and a flash light beam. All the lights in that house were on.
I started walking toward the scene.
As I approached, a guy in shorts was scraping debris off his concrete driveway with a shovel and tossing the contents into the flames. I yelled, “It’s 2 am. We all sleep at night and work during the day in this neighborhood. What are you doing?”
His answer (high pitched and excited), “I haven’t been home in a few months. Got to get this done.”
I responded harshly, “I’ll call and get you some help.” I turned toward home while I dialed the local number for the county Sheriff’s department.
The dispatcher took my information. Three patrol cars arrived in reasonable time. They pulled into the driveway and I explained the situation. They said they would investigate.

The neighbor’s house was now dark and the fire a wet pile of smoldering ash and debris. There was a half of an hour of discussion between the deputies and the neighbor. The deputies departed without giving me information.
I realized that not all loud noises are shotgun blasts. Sometimes a spray paint can gets tossed into a fire and explodes (twice some nights). I talked to the neighbor the following day.
I’ll never know how many shooting stars I missed or where the puppies went. However, the neighbor and I sorted things out and all is normal again around the house.
