What could be more fundamental than bodily autonomy?

I marched with over 100 other protesters in a small Utah town on July 4th to protest the Supreme Court decision to overthrow Roe vs. Wade. Many were young people that I do not recognize, many like myself are post-menopausal and quite a few are lesbians. Probably half the men and women that marched in that group are in a demographic that will not need an abortion. The issue is bigger than abortion: It is about the government dictating the decisions we make about our own bodies.

It is not enough for Congress to ‘look into’ codifying Roe. It is time that Congress gave us back our bodily autonomy, not only to choose when to bring children into this world, but also how we wish to leave this life physically, with whom we choose to have sex and how and whether we choose to use therapies including drugs on the controlled substance list. For too long government has been dictating choices of bodily autonomy, based on the religious choices of a few elites. The Democrats are a party of the Big Tent and framing the debate on abortion as ‘Bodily Autonomy’ will allow them to push legislation on a broad range of freedoms which are highly motivating to young and old alike from every demographic in the country: Legalize Marijuana, Abortion, and Euthanasia. Make sure that religious zealots keep governmental edicts out of our medical and sexual decisions.

Nothing could be more fundamental than the right to bodily autonomy. It is time for our representatives to take big bold action.
