Don't let that Ace fool you

Here’s a fun headline from TheHill.com to close out the week. Fun in the anti-fun sarcastic sense.

White House faces disaster with young voters

For the serious types here on DK, the piece is worth a read and a ponder.

Here’s the quote I’m flashing on:

“A lot of the young people that I’m talking to in particular right now are asking what the point is of having a Democratic trifecta if our rights are still being ripped away,” said Ellen Sciales, communications director at the youth climate activist group the Sunrise Movement.

I’m going to keep this diary short. Two thoughts:

A) The point is not giving the reds the whole government … that should be obvious.

B) “[T]rifecta” is the tell. Don’t let that 8th Grade Civics class fog your thinking. There may be three “Article” branches in our Constitution, but at the federal level there are at least five actual mostly independent branches (= centers of power). (And all of that doesn’t even address the DC vs 50 States vertical dimension.)

Oh, and if it needs repeating: only one of them, the least powerful/impactful, is “democratic” (#5 below). All the rest are different degrees of democratic (1,3,4) and oligarchic (2) republican (in the political science, not partisan sense of the word). And that’s by design, so don’t go ranting about corruptions of our system.

Here listed roughly in order of impact on daily life for most people:

SCOTUS — hope that doesn’t need explaining; it has the final say; works at a glacial pace; controls the Big Things; when you lose it, will take a generation+ to get it back The United States Federal Reserve System — the thing that most impacts the economy; note that it considers itself a private institution, although its top level governance has very loose accountability to 3 & 4 below POTUS The Senate The House of Representatives

There is no “Democratic trifecta”. Democrats “control” only 3 and 5. That’s the reality of the situation.

You can throw a hissy fit over it, or understand that to get full control, you need all five. The Royal Flush in Spades, to use the poker analogy. Hence the image at the top of this diary.

Our situation, blues, is that we will very likely lose 5 in November. 4 is still winnable, but not if what should be one of our strongest factions (= you, GenZ) checks out.

In order to have any say at all on 1 and 2, you need 3, and some clout in 4. Longer range thinking would help.

Young blues, we’ve got a sh***y hand. Whingeing/kvetching about it doesn’t help.

Pretty much the only useful thing any of us can do here and now is lean in and work on the campaigns to save 4 and 5, and any competitive local and state races.
