Holy Sh*t Time Again!

Looks like my overly optimistic assessment of last week’s numbers is now officially in the dumpster as the world has seen the worst looking trends this week since the early days of Omicron more than half a year ago.

The global weekly caseload grew by over 1 million and is now nearing the 7 million mark — higher than any pre-Omicron peak ever reached, and over 60% higher than where it was just 3 weeks prior. Even worse, the global weekly death toll jumped by nearly a quarter this week, and is likewise now more than 40% higher than where it was 3 weeks ago. The only question now is how long this current wave will last, and how high it will reach.

I should point out here that the weekly stats I’ve been compiling are now diverging from worldometer’s own “official” weekly stats to an ever-increasing degree as more nations adopt the Swedish system of backdating their deaths to the date they actually occurred rather than the date they were first reported. So while this does improve the overall historical accuracy of the pandemic’s progress, it also grossly distorts the trends of the most recent few weeks -- making it look like they’re moving in a more favorable direction than may be the actual case.
