On July 8, President Biden said:
Just last week, it was reported that a 10-year-old girl was a rape victim — 10 years old — and she was forced to have to travel out of state to Indiana to seek to terminate the pregnancy and maybe save her life.”
The source was an Indiana Ob-gyn doctor, reported in the Indianapolis Star. The right wing smear machine went into warp speed mode, including attacks on the story by Ohio’s AG and Governor.
Just a day after President Biden’s speech, the Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler wrote: A one-source story about a 10-year-old and an abortion goes viral, turbo-charging the right wing outrage machine. Jonathan Turley, apologist for every horrible person and thing imaginable cited Kessler in the New York Post to validate criticism of the story.
Today, the rapist was arrested. Kessler “updated” the story, but did not apologize or otherwise admit any error.
x The fact you think there has to be an arrest to corroborate a rape story is itself a really egregious error of judgment. *Most* rapists are never caught, any law enforcement or survivor advocate group can tell you that. The word from a named doctor on the record should be enough.
