NYT Poll: Only 29% of Voters Support Supreme Court Ruling on Abortion [1]

The NYT/Siena College poll taken July 5-7 that shows 61% of registered voters oppose the Supreme Courts decision overturning Roe versus Wade while 29% support the ruling.

Overall, the poll shows a virtual tie among voter peferences for November with 41% favoring Democratic control of the US Congress and 40% favoring Republicans. Abortion is considered “extremely important” by 61% of voters, ranking behind the economy, inflation, political divisions, and gun policies.

Looking deeper into the abortion question, 65% of registered voters want abortion to be always or mostly legal, (33% always legal and 32% mostly). Some 26% want it to be illegal, (6% always illegal and 20% mostly illegal).

Men want abortion to be legal by 60% to 29%. Women favor abortion rights by 70% to 23%.

One of the most striking differences on abortion is among different age groups. For the 18 to 29 year old group, abortion rights is favored by an overwhelming 88% to 11%. But even among voters that are over 65, keeping abortion legal is favored by 54% to 35%.

According to a Pew Research poll released last month, young people have recently become more supportive of legal abortions.
