Little Mama and the pineapple.
I live in So Cal. If you look up the definition of “ethnically diverse”, they show a map of So Cal. The smells of dinner cooking here can be so tantalizing, wafting across the backyards in the afternoon breeze and the sounds of so many languages surround me. I love it here.
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!

There are cultural aspects to everyone’s background that we all take into account on a daily basis. One of the things I have noticed recently is the propensity for many younger than I am people to call me “Little Mama” when doing business. It is meant endearingly. I am told “There is a chair inside where you can sit and wait until your tire is fixed, Little Mama.” or “Be careful with that plate, Little Mama, it is HOT!”
I first noticed it at my fave Chinese take out place and just chalked it up to the speaker’s limited English skills. (Their cooking skills are the bomb.) Then I thought perhaps it is an honorific in some Asian languages. They all treat me with friendly respect so I was not worried.
But yesterday, I had a flat tire in the morning, put air in it and took the car around the corner to the Latino owned tire shop to be fixed. The young man helped me immediately, got the tire off and into get the nail removed and told me about the chair inside, Little Mama, where I could wait. I was standing outside, enjoying the morning air. Within 15 minutes I was heading back home with a fixed tire and $15 lighter in the wallet. It was a deal!
The grounds keepers at the local cemetery where I walk Razzle have all come to know me and her. They all wave and if they are close enough, the call out “Good Morning, Little Mama! How’s Razzle today?” They are from various ethnic backgrounds but have the same term for little old ladies. Funny.
I find it rather sweet in my old age. I love the variety of folks, food, languages, and customs. Bill is not so enchanted but that is his loss. We are the classic example of the “half full, half empty” argument. We agree it is a glass, and there is water in it, but it all goes south from there. Personally, I am glad to be the half full side.
As an aside, at lunch my Saturday BFF gave me $15 cash for her share of lunch since I had no cash and used my ATM card. Not an hour later, I went to the tire shop and gave that very $15 to the nice young man who fixed my tire. That’s high finance in the lower classes. It never even got warm in my wallet. I am sure he gave it to someone for dinner a couple of hours later.
How are you all today, Little Mamas, Big Daddies, and everyone in between?
