Some of Mariposa Grove's hundreds of ancient sequoias date back more than 2,000 years.
The Washburn Fire continues to threaten parts of Yosemite National Park, but officials are confident that the blaze won’t harm some of its oldest inhabitants. Speaking with SFGate, forest ecologist and firefighter Garrett Dickman expressed confidence that the giant sequoias in Mariposa Grove would be spared. “The grove itself right now seems to be in pretty good shape,” Dickman told the outlet following an assessment. “Some of the trees had some burn on them, but the level of burn was well within their ability to to handle it.” Officials are still investigating what exactly led to the fire breaking out in the first place, but Yosemite Superintendent Cicely Muldoon believes that humans may be to blame.
Speaking during a community meeting in Oakhurst on Monday, Muldoon said that there was “no lightning on that day so it is a human start … It's under investigation,” Muldoon continued. “That's all I can say about that right now. We're looking at that really hard.” Close to 700 people are battling the fire from a variety of agencies. Those resources being available can mostly be chalked up to the fire breaking out early in the wildfire season. CalFire lists just four active fires of interest as of Tuesday, the smallest of which spans 15 acres. Though things look hopeful when it comes to containing the Washburn Fire, the images out of Yosemite are certainly alarming.
