22-year-old Bobby Wolfe, a former Defensive Back football player for the University of Arizona, has been charged with manslaughter for killing his girlfriend, 23-year-old Chrisheena Lamontrici Lee, in Pasadena, a suburb of Houston.

Around the 3am hour on Monday, the Pasadena Police Department were notified of Wolfe experiencing a burglary inside an apartment complex, in which he grabbed his gun in self-defence. Wolfe told authorities that he shot at who he believes was the intruder, at least six times; sadly, he actually shot Lee. Lee was taken to hospital via helicopter, but she was later pronounced dead. The Pasadena Police Department are trying to corroborate Wolfe’s stance of a home invasion.

"We're going to collect shell casings. We're going to look at the trajectory of the bullets and compare that to his statement and try to see if everything matches up. If it truly is accidental, obviously this is a very sad situation," Sgt. Raul Granados said on Monday. "If he did believe there was a break-in and, in fact, there wasn't, he ended up shooting his loved one. It's a very difficult situation for him. If there was an intruder, obviously, we want to find maybe doorbell cameras, maybe cameras at the apartment complex, to see if we are going to have to look for a suspect out there, or what happened at the door that startled him enough to get his weapon out and start shooting." Police said Wolfe stayed at the scene and was cooperating with investigators.

However, Lee’s family aren’t convinced that Wolfe was a victim of a home invasion. In fact, her cousins have said that Lee was being stalked by Wolfe. Bobby Wolfe and Chrisheena Lee have a 2-year-old child together; that child was with another relative during the time of the shooting.

"She's been getting away from him. She's been telling the family he's stalking her," Lee's cousin, Tasha McCoy, said. "He just wouldn't leave her alone." [...] "He should be in jail," another cousin, Travis McCoy, said. "You didn't have to go to this extent, and then you lie about it, and cover it up. It just doesn't make sense."

If the incident was, in fact, a home invasion, then it could fall under Texas’s Stand Your Ground law, although whether the law itself is racially fair is in dispute. If the shooting wasn’t a result of a home invasion, then this incident would underscore the issue of domestic violence. In 2020, there was a 23 per cent increase in homicides as a result of domestic violence within the state of Texas. If the increase compared to 2019 wasn’t sobering enough, 228 people being killed from domestic violence was the highest figure in at least two decades. In Harris County, the picture is even more daunting. Not only did incidents of domestic violence within the county increased by 40 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019, but the number of homicides as a result of family violence has jumped by roughly 80 per cent, and incidents of domestic violence involving a gun went up by 21 per cent. It didn’t help that many suffered through a combination of the pandemic and ongoing socioeconomic issues.

Either way, this shooting is another incident that shows how everyday Americans can be killed by a gun easily.
