Todays Science Note is a grim warning.
After most of a century of always being 10 years in the future, AI is making startling improvements. First Alpha Go not only beats the worlds best Go players but used startling strategies only 20 or so humans can comprehend. Its a self teaching neural net, too, nothing linear or programmed by humans.
Now you may have heard of Google's chat bot, LaMBDA? An engineer claims its become sentient and released transcripts of text chats with it. I don't know about that, but if the transcripts are undoctored, it certainly passes the Turing test with ease.
Recognize those women? I hope not, as they don't exist except as images created by the frighteningly powerful program “DALL-E”.
Right now, DALL-E is restricted to use by researchers and journalists. Supposedly some measures are in place to stop production of deep fake images of political figures but it will eventually escape into the wild, be jailbroken, and we're not ready for that.
Think things are bad now with people algorithmically stirred up by Face Tube? Wait until every one sees a constant stream of photos of their enemies eating babies for breakfast. I fear social media will be flooded with this.
And its not photoshop either. That requires time, effort, and skill, DALL·E simply needs to be asked. In plain English which it understands.

Funny, I would have predicted our downfall from promethean Big Science, like giant robots, genetic engineering or atomics, which at least would have been dramatically Wagnerian and cool, but most likely it will be our own nature. Not with a bang, but a whimper...
