Fresh from the back yard. Yes, my back yard.
Some of you may remember my diary of last year about making tomato soup. Last year’s crop provided a lot of sauce, as well, which we’ve used all winter and spring for pizza, pasta, and whatever.
Well, this year’s crop looks like a seed catalog picture. I have no idea why the plants have produced so well, but they’ve gone absolutely bonkers, and there are literally hundreds and hundreds of tomatoes in the garden this year.
This is one day’s harvest, and we’re getting this amount every other day. I have already frozen a couple of quarts of sauce, after boiling down the juice, and there will be many more to come.
The second picture is a small part of the garden, which shows what is yet to harvest. I see a lot of sauce and BLTs in my future.
Yolo County in California has always been known for growing commercial tomatoes, so it shouldn’t be surprising that I could get such a harvest. But the last two years have been so strange, weather wise, that yields have been low. Most home gardeners here in 2020 got very few tomatoes because of the weather conditions.
But it appears this year has been perfect, and I’m one happy gardener. Eating perfect tomatoes every day is a great tradeoff for hot weather.
