I don’t know what anyone has told you, but if you are dealing with an unplanned pregnancy there are some things you should never do.

You should never douche with peroxide. It will kill you. It is, sometimes recommended as a way to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Never by any woman who tried it, because they’re all dead.

You may survive if you douche with Lysol or green soap, but it isn’t a given. Lysol used to advertise, discreetly that it could be used to end unwanted pregnancies. Most of the women who used it survived, some of them undamaged, but not all of them.

Drinking oil of pennyroyal will kill you. Pennyroyal is a member of the mint family. It is a world class insect repellent. It is not to be taken internally.

Drinking turpentine may not kill you, but it won’t be good for you either. Turpentine was another old time remedy for unwanted pregnancies. It may have worked sometimes. It also killed people, sometimes.

Inserting foreign objects into your cervix, coffee stirrers, knitting needles, crochet hooks or coat hangers will, at the very least,cause a very bad infection. At worst they can kill you too.

Victorians recommended strenuous exercise to bring on “slow periods”. Do we all know what slows up the menstrual cycle? Yes, that’s right.

Victorian women had limited access to birth control. (Or, as they called it, voluntary motherhood.) Queen Victoria had nine children, not because she liked kids. (She didn’t.) But because she liked sex. (After Princess Beatrice, baby number nine, was born, Queen Victoria’s doctor said it was time to stop, and her majesty asked, sadly, “Can I have no more fun in bed?”)

Anyway, if you find out you’re pregnant and you don’t want to be, if you live in a red state, maybe hit the gym.

Thanks to Trump’s Supreme Court we’re moving backwards to the not so good old days, and women will die from do it yourself abortions.

So, the word needs to go out. Those remedies you heard about, the ones your great grandmother used, mostly didn’t work, and sometimes were deadly.

Republicans are passionately in love with the past, but this is is a part of the past I wouldn’t think anyone would love.

Though I may be wrong.
