Hey all!I hope your Saturday evening is going well. This is going to be fairly short as I dislocated my elbow two weeks ago. It is difficult to type with one hand, and of course my non-dominant hand at that.

I’ve never broken a bone before so this has been an interesting experience. Here’s the run down:

This is Dylan. He is 16.2 hands (5’4 to the withers). I am 5’2 for reference. He is big, but he's an even bigger sweetheart.

My jumping instructor asked me what horse I wanted to ride. I had never ridden him but I had seen him in the arena and he looked amazing.

I got there an hour early and played with him. He was very respectful during lunging. Immediately in love with him. He would follow me around, if I ran he trotted after me, I sprinted, he cantered and even threw in a flying lead change when I made a sharp turn.

I stopped to catch my breath and he stood next to me, shoulder to shoulder, which is a sign of respect.

I took him to get groomed and tacked up. The owner of the ranch was watching me which was a little intimidating. But, she said that she was surprised at how he was acting with me while in the cross ties. He usually requires a “more stern and assertive attitude” for him to cooperate but I seemed “calm.” (Which probably had something to do with the fact that I had already ridden five horses and taught two group lessons at the ranch I work at.)

I took him to the arena and got on. Right off the bat I liked him, his gait was smooth and he was in frame effortlessly. I collected him and asked for a working walk, it was honestly the best feeling. I really enjoyed him. We trotted and I was able to sit. I knew what was coming as soon as my trainer started walking towards the poles. My little dressage moment was over. We did some trot poles, it was clear he knew exactly what he was doing. It was like he was counting the strides with me. The jumps were up but I was nervous. I hadn’t cantered him yet and he was getting antsy.

I finally asked for a canter, picked up the wrong lead, circle at a trot and got the lead. Just as I went to praise him he jolted. Someone had dumped out a water bucket. So scary. It happened so fast I was on the ground before I could even blink. I hit the ground and stayed still in case there was head or back trauma. Nothing hurt which was suspicious so I felt my body with my right hand and as soon as I brushed over the left elbow I let out a nice little “F*CK.” And then “its broken!” And of course the owner of the ranch was watching me ride this whole time. Her and my trainer came over and looked at me.

“Is it bad?”

“That does not look good.”

“Shit.”

No tears. I was really frustrated at myself, I had just had the best ride of my life and then slipped up at the wrong time and set myself three months back. They called an ambulance and firetruck. I was really hoping to see some sexy firemen, or women, that didn't happen. :/

I was very disappointed by that.

This is where it gets wild. They gave me morphine for the pain and shipped me off to the nearest trauma center.

As soon as I got there I was on a table getting x-rayed. Then I was in the hallway of the hospital. I don't really remember much in between. Hours later I finally got a room and my dad FINALLY sat down in a chair. He stood next to me for way too long until he finally accepted the chair offer.

It still took a while until the doctors were ready to put my elbow back in place. As you can see, it was very much not in place. I think this is when the fear finally started to kick in. I didn't know what was going to happen to me when they put me under. Then it gets a little fuzzy.

The next thing I remember is them telling me they're giving me ketamine. I remember saying that Ive used it on horses before and they laughed. Then they gave it to me.

It went like this:

“I don't feel i- oh God”

I heard some muffled laughter then I felt the earth spinning and rotating around the sun.

I started waking up and immediately I knew I wasn't supposed to wake up so I started making whatever noises I could. My elbow had fallen back out of the socket. Great. So know I’m rotating around the sun again.

My dad told me when I finally got to the car that he saw my arm when they lifted it up.

Here is Glen The Plumber on the matter:

“They cut the cardboard off and that was the first time that I saw your arm. The orthopedic guy grabbed your hand, lifted it up a few inches and he twisted it slightly back and forth, you could tell that the bottom half of the arm was not connected to the top half. And then I said ‘ooh, that was gross’ and they all looked at me.”

Moving.

So I had a very heavy splint on for about a week. Now I have this cool contraption that allows me to move my arm a certain amount. I am at 40 degrees of movement right now.

This is my arm right now. Kinda gross. It is feeling much better than it looks.

You can see the gear looking thing by my elbow. That is where the movement is controlled.

So, the healing process isn't too bad. In six weeks, the splint will come off and I can drive (thank God). I finish physical therapy is weeks later and I am good to get back in the saddle. I may seem crazy, but I can't wait to get back on Dylan.

The only big issue here is that I do have fractures, but they are too small for surgery. Soooo.. EARLY ARTHRITIS WOO!!

Anyways. I did not intend on writing this much. So I’m going to end it here and go ice my arm.

Happy Saturday
