Even at 8 a.m., June 2 was blazing hot outside Mission Hospital. Few trees lent little shade at the entrance to the complex. But the registered nurses who gathered that morning for a rally with National Nurses United are used to being on their feet for long periods of time in uncomfortable conditions.

About 50 RNs and their supporters, including a doctor wearing scrubs who had just completed a night shift, rallied to raise awareness about alleged dangerous conditions at Mission Hospital, which is owned by HCA Healthcare.

Greg Lowe, president of HCA’s North Carolina Division, has previously acknowledged a national nursing shortage. However, Mission’s RNs allege HCA management is letting staff decrease to unsafe levels through attrition as a cost-cutting measure and the result is unsafe nurse-to-patient ratios. The understaffing also means RNs are unable to take meal or bathroom breaks, they say.

Mission’s RNs have raised alarms about unsafe staffing for years, says Hannah Drummond, an emergency room nurse who spoke at the June 2 rally. Mission RNs began holding rallies after HCA bought Mission in 2019; gatherings in August 2020, October 2021 and April 2022 warned of unsafe staffing numbers.

On June 24, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Dobbs v. Jackson that abortion is not a right under the Constitution, overturning the precedent set by Roe v. Wade in 1973. Legislation on abortion is now solely up to individual states.

While the procedure remains legal in North Carolina to the point of fetal viability (roughly 24-26 weeks into pregnancy), many nearby states have either enacted stricter abortion laws or are expected to do so in the coming months. The Supreme Court’s decision has thus made Planned Parenthood’s Asheville Health Center, which provides abortions, an even more significant destination for reproductive health care in the Southeast.

As the sole abortion provider in Western North Carolina, the Asheville center will become the closest legal abortion destination for millions of people.

Protests over the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade continue in the mountains.

Nearly 20 protesters gathered in McDowell County for the “Peaceful Protest for Women’s Rights” rally Friday evening. “It breaks my heart,” organizer Kayla Reed said when asked about the Supreme Court’s decision.

In the two weeks following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, frustration remained high for those who believe in pro-choice rights. “Women should have their own choice,” Reed said. About 6 p.m., a crowd gathered in Old Fork and surrounded Arrowhead Monument in the downtown area. “It needs to be set right,” 65-year-old Sherry Franklin said.

There's a new warning from those tracking the symptoms of the newest variant of the coronavirus. Public health providers said the newer BA.5 subvariant of omicron may be one of the most contagious strains yet.

It's likely what's driving up the cases in the U.S. and around the world. The United Kingdom said its cases are likely rising due to the variant at about half a million a week, according to the Office for National Statistics. It had a 32% increase in cases this past week just from the week before.

Its main symptoms are:

Coughing

Runny nose

Sore throat

Fatigue

Headache

Muscle pain

Sneezing

Pain

These are all symptoms that are not likely to put a person in the hospital with one exception that can take the virus from mild to more severe. That's shortness of breath or trouble breathing.

The Big Crafty was founded in 2008 by Brandy Bourne & Justin Rabuck. First held at The Grey Eagle, the event moved into its longtime home at the Asheville Art Museum before moving again to its current alternating homes at Pack Square Park and Harrah’s Cherokee Center Asheville.

Join us on July 10, 2022 in beautiful downtown Asheville ♥ 12-7PM @ PACK SQUARE PARK

The Big Crafty is a hand-to-heart celebration of creative exuberance at the heart of Asheville, NC. We believe in supporting creative venturers by crafting warm communities of creative practice.

We extend warm welcome to the rich pageant of basement and backyard artists, juried prize-winners, and those who delight in them. And we’re so grateful to have been voted Best Arts/Crafts Fair (Thx, Mountain Xpress!) every year since we began in 2008. We’re proud to boost our creative communities in all their go-for-broke, full-of-heart, boundary-pushing, human-scale, all-in, full-tilt glory.

The Big Crafty is a great inspiration to makers of all varieties. The event itself exudes a fantastic D.I.Y. energy; an “anything is possible” feeling. It is very empowering for the community.

The Big Crafty models how to combine personal care and attention with professionalism—this is a huge asset in our arts community (and larger culture) where competition is so often the norm. In this way, The Big Crafty helps set a standard for community-wide growth and development.

Thanks for reading and contributing, I hope you have a nice weekend.
