Posted on Facebook by a colleague, copying a posted exchange between Jane van Dis MD and one of her followers. Highlighting is mine.

Dr. van Dis:

OBGYN Colleague in Missouri: “We are now observing patients with ectopic pregnancy and hemoperitoneum until they have a documented falling hemoglobin or unstable vital signs.”

1:50 pregnancies is ectopic

Follower:

Am I reading this wrong or are they saying they have to wait until the patient is dying to terminate an unviable pregnancy?

Dr. van Dis:

That’s what the hospital attorney is saying.

Hemoperitoneum is the presence of blood in the peritoneal cavity. The blood accumulates in the space between the inner lining of the abdominal wall and the internal abdominal organs. Hemoperitoneum is generally classified as a surgical emergency;
