I just heard about this recently, but apparently it is a thing. I would encourage everyone to look around your home, look at whatever habits and routines you have, and find ways to make some changes.

“We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”

~Anne Marie Bonneau

I don’t know who Anne Marie is, but she nailed it. (this quote was included in a marketing email from one of the online sellers I frequent)

It’s not that hard. I have not purchased a plastic jug of mostly-water laundry detergent in more than 2 years. And well more than a year since buying plastic bottles of (again, mostly water) shampoo, conditioner, liquid hand soap, all-purpose spray cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, or dishwashing liquid. No more little plastic-contained deodorants and no longer contributing to micro plastics pollution with sponges, scrubbers, or toothbrushes – although I very likely am still adding to that problem in other ways. I keep looking for new things I can do or not do. In fact, I only recently stopped using tea bags and now cold brew in a strainer to make my iced tea. And I have gifted a lot of these products to friends and family to try to get them on board, too.

While some items are more expensive, some are not and some are even less so because they last so long, like the sponges I’m now using. I love them; they never stink and I can use them till they fall apart, which is months. Hmm, maybe I don’t wash dishes often enough...nah, as long as there’s still some room on the counter, we’re good :)

Obviously, none of us can eliminate plastic entirely in the purchases we must make. But do look for alternatives. I try to avoid plastic packaging at the grocery store but that is often not possible. So I will continue on my imperfect journey and hope to bring a few more along…

Reduce, reuse, recycle — in that order!
