We Know About Friendship
The Incredible Power Of Friendship
The scientific literature offers plenty of insight on what close friends do for us.They give us confidence and bolster our sense of self, especially during tough times. They increase our sense of purpose and belonging. And they significantly influence some of our most important behaviors. Studies have found that if you have a friend who becomes obese you are 57 percent more likely to become obese; if you have a friend who quits smoking you become 36 percent less likely to start lighting up. The flip side of this is also true: when your friends adopt healthy behaviors, like regular exercise, you become much more likely to do the same. In other words, the people with whom you surround yourself have an enormous impact on your life. In many ways, they shape it. But when it comes to what — or perhaps more accurately, who — makes a good friend, the scientific literature is sparser. Simply being in the flesh with someone does not make a lasting, meaningful relationship. Which got me thinking: what, exactly, does?
Aristotle wrote about friendships based on utility, pleasure, or virtue. I am going to leave the first two alone. That’s Trump territory.
While all three of Aristotle’s friendships can be advantageous, only those founded in virtue — and with common core values — are enduring and meaningful: “Perfect friendship is the friendship of [those] who are alike in virtue,” he wrote. “For these [individuals] wish well to each other [in all circumstances] and thus [these friendships] are good in themselves.”
To befriend Deplorables we must therefore first find common ground—shared values. This is also how we begin Truth Sandwiches.
Shared value number one is that people like to be appreciated and listened to empathetically. That is what Daryl Davis did, and what cult deprogrammers do, among others.
Steven Hassan, the author of The Cult of Trump, was a cultist himself, a Moonie (Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church). After being rescued by his family, he set himself to understand the thousands of cults that plague us, and to find the most effective methods of protecting ourselves from them, and rescuing other victims. He has written a densely packed book, with far too much genuine information for me to summarize here. Please get this book and read it, and take time to absorb and apply it. Effective deprogramming begins by building friendship and trust. The same thing works on terrorists, as in FBI practice. CIA torture just hardened their resistance.
The pretense of empathy is unfortunately the starting point for grifters, quacks, seducers, and cult leaders. But they don’t do it for real. For them it is just an act to get at some form of utility or pleasure. We, on the other hand, can insensibly lead our friends to virtue by taking them seriously while challenging them to think for themselves, just as we would do with our own children.
We are talking about people who live inside carefully-constructed shells impervious to assault from outside. We have to encourage them to break out from the inside, using their natural abilities, which no shell can destroy.
All of this is a familiar part of human culture. TV Tropes has collected a wide variety of examples, some Older than Dirt, like Gilgamesh and Enkidu, and some from centuries yet to come, like Darmok in ST:TNG.
The Power of Friendship
That’s a term from pro wrestling kayfabe, in which such events are simply acting. What we want is the real thing, like ex-slave ship Captain John Newton or Daryl Davis’s ex-KKK friends.

Upgraded CERN Crosses the Beams
Creates new particle combinations. Sorry, no black holes or portals to—better not say. If you can read this, they haven’t destroyed the Universe, either. I will spare you the collective weirdness about CERN out on the Web. It isn’t the right kind for a GNR.

Pentaquarks are combinations of a three-quark baryon and a quark-antiquark meson. This new one includes a strange quark. Tetraquarks are made of two mesons.
