It’s hard to remember back to the dark days before we had COVID-19 vaccines and boosters. I know I remember worrying that the day would never come and when it did, worrying about if or when I could get one, and wondering if others (especially anti-vaxxers) would even take it.

Then in December of 2020, up stepped Sandra Lindsay, an intensive care nurse from New York. She was the first person in the U.S. to bravely get that shot in her arm—a giant leap toward normalizing vaccines and giving reluctant Americans the courage to get the jab and hopefully stop the spread of the virus.

For her bravery, President Joe Biden will honor her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, The Washington Post reports, along with 16 others including Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington, soccer star Megan Rapinoe, former Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, and Gold Star father Khizr Khan, to name a few.
