For some, this is an inconvenient aspect of life; for others, it is no more than a truism.

Introduction

Russell Johnson, Leonard Nimoy, and Greg Morris were just actors; but they breathed life into the 1960s-era TV characters that inspired multitudes to pursue interests in Science and Mathematics.

Considering some of the television programs that I watched as a kid, in concert with current events (such as the space race), it ought not to be a surprise that some of the characters in my favorite shows inspired me and countless others to take an interest in Science and Mathematics.

Richard Dawkins and Memes

The man credited with coining the word “meme” is Richard Dawkins. I have been lucky enough to meet several scientists, and one of them was Dawkins.

Shortly after Dawkins coined the term, the meaning of “meme” began to evolve. Dawkins, being an Evolutionary Biologist, rolled with it and adapted.

Although some people take different views as to what is a true “meme” and what isn’t, I prefer not to get into that debate. I view a meme as a preferably pithy application of words to a picture to produce a message. I like using humor in my memes, but I also add elements of irony, or point out hypocrisy, in the manner of a political cartoonist.

As a scientist, Dawkins is fair game for a science-based meme.

Science and Mathematics in Memes

Many memes (not just mine) that pertain to Science and Mathematics dwell upon the practical difficulties associated with the subjects.

As happens from time to time, some people go further than merely complaining about the hard work associated with such studies, and sometimes will say that the subjects themselves are so worthless that it was a waste of time to study them in the first place.

Those that venture upon such an insult might deserve a little pushback:

Yeah, ouch.

Here are a modest collections of my memes pertaining to Science, Math, and Engineering, for all of the folks out there who have invested themselves in the subjects.

Chemistry Cat / Science Cat

Chemistry Cat, also called Science Cat, is a classic meme for bringing humor to the sciences. Although such memes can be thought-provoking...

Isn’t it a lot easier just to say “sunrise”?? Do we have to drag Copernicus into it?

… more common are the Science-based puns.

Elementary (yet technically molecular).

This be one bad pun.

Someone with a science background would get this one.

Einstein

In addition to being a brainy scientist, Albert Einstein was the symbol of brainy scientists everywhere. Consequently, he turns up in science memes from time to time.

It shouldn't take an Einstein to figure that out.

Science fans realize at once that the "equations" can be rejected because "the units obviously don't balance." And yes, I have seen the classic cartoon, which is a favorite of scientists.

My, that was profound.

This and that.

Young mathematician.

There are some things engineers cannot fix, but they get asked anyway.

I had a prof who did something like this with a problem involving integral calculus. After filling three blackboards with computations, he arrived at an answer, then said, "To check the answer, simply differentiate."

This is "doctor talk" for a debilitating condition that afflicts many wannabe politicians.

Puberty explained.

Science fights a never-ending battle against human foolishness and stubbornness.

Real science is more amazing than any ancient fables.

Not everyone is thrilled about the scientific method.

And finally...
