I ran across this ABC News article about Democratic Senator Michael Bennet of CO being confronted by his constituents about whether or not he supported killing the filibuster and expanding the Supreme Court to undo the Dobbs decision. Naturally, the Media loves to write articles about Democrats in Disarray. However, I think this one did accurately reflect the frustration we all feel about the Democratic Party’s “reaction” to the overturning of Roe. But this is the part I wanted to highlight in this news item:

Though Bennet represents a state that has voted solidly Democratic in several consecutive elections, he could still be vulnerable in November if a Republican wave materializes. The GOP has nominated a challenger who, notably for a Republican, supports a ban on later-term abortions but otherwise backs abortion rights. Bennet has relied on Colorado voters' strong support of abortion rights to win his two prior elections, and he knows he cannot afford complacency or apathy among his voters. During his speech at the June 29 Colorado Springs rally, Bennet spoke about the Supreme Court ruling and addressed Democrats' frustration and despair. “Don't give up,” he said. “We can't just accept things the way they are.” It was after Bennet's speech, when he joined local Democratic nominees onstage in a show of party unity, that Lauer and the others charged in. After talking to reporters offstage, Bennet spoke with the demonstrators. He told them he was also frustrated at how his party had let things get to the point where the GOP appointed a 6-3 majority on the high court. He agreed with them on ending the filibuster and codifying Roe but opposed packing the court. If Democrats did that, he said, “we will guarantee the majority in the Senate will be an anti-choice Senate.”

Is there any real data to support what Bennet says about expanding the SCOTUS? I have no idea. I’m reasonably sure that pre-Dobb’s voters would be against expanding the SCOTUS. But what about now that Roe is gone? And we have voting rights being taken away thanks to this SCOTUS. The reactionary hacks on the SCOTUS struck down gun safety laws by the states. And they are happy to see the planet burn from carbon dioxide emmissions.

Does anyone have any idea what the voters think after all those SCOTUS decisions by an illegitimate court? Remember, the SCOTUS approval rating is goind DOWN not up. I’m thinking that Bennet is just one of those typical Senate Democrats who doesn’t want to make fundamental changes to our government. Incrementalism at its worst.

Yes, he is for ending the filibuster, but what if we codify Roe. Does anyone think that a codified law will not end up back at this very same SCOTUS? How much you wanna bet the codified law will be ruled unconstitutional? There was no real legal argument in the Dobb’s decision. Alito was all, “We are saving lives.”

Does anyone think he and the other reactionaries will allow a law to stand that “kills babies?”

I’d be glad to hear what the rest of you think.
