Last week we had friends visit that we hadn’t seen in over 2 years. They live in the central coast of California, having moved recently from Los Angeles. We spent a lot of our visit chatting about the current state of affairs in this country, and of course, we were all very unhappy with what’s happened recently.

They are reliable Democratic voters, and likely make donations as well. That said, I’m so glad they’re not on social media because they trash talked the party repeatedly. After several conversations it gets old real quick. Finally I had to do the ungracious host thing and say, “But we’re the Democrats!” Meaning everyone at the table. It did quiet them down a bit, and I hope that they got the real message that ‘the Democrats’ are not a shadowy group of people pulling the levers of party policy and candidates, but all of us. We all have a role in helping the party be successful, especially in the years of living on the cusp of fascism and authoritarianism.

Thanks to this thread I was able to rebut their argument that the Democrats should have codified RvW in the past decades. x DEM STATES

Do something: state edition. We could have this nationwide with large Dem majority in Congress.

1. NY - already had among the most liberal abortion law in nation; passed 6 more bills since leaked opinion. This is what Dem majority can do. https://t.co/5ffqNyav46 — Professor Darren Hutchinson (@dissentingj) June 27, 2022

I wish I had seen this thread prior to their arrival; someone reposted it last Friday. This thread provides a month by month tally of the total Dems in the Senate in 2009. It shows the myth of a supposed supermajority of Dems in the Senate. x Ok, so here's a little thread about a Supermajority that Obama NEVER had.

Mitt Romney started a myth back in 2012, claiming that Obama had a Supermajority, that was a lie.

It NEVER really happened.

Here is the reality, with all the receipts.

SUPERMAJORITY — Jene Sais-quoi 🌺🌴🤙🏼 (@JustAGurLnSwedn) February 28, 2020 I’ve bookmarked these threads and have shared at least one of them already in response to an uninformed twitter comment. You may want to consider doing the same. I so appreciate the work that people have done to help clarify and inform people on Twitter. I’ve found myself reading Professor Hutchinson a lot lately because of his well informed threads.

Another person that provides excellent info and comments is Teri Kanefield. x 28/ Autocracy is SWIFT and exciting and thrilling.

The leader lands blows on the enemy and people cheer.

Democracy and rule of law are boring.

Are people okay with boring?

I don't know the answer to those questions, so I don't know if democracy will survive.

28/ — Teri Kanefield (@Teri_Kanefield) July 3, 2022 Her patience seems limitless as she repeatedly explains the danger of ‘do something’ demands to our elected leaders. Basically, autocrats can respond swiftly and that’s a big part of their attraction. Our system is not perfect, but it’s hand’s down way better than autocracy. We have to give it the time it needs. Real justice can take time, checks and balances are slow and therefore voting really is the solution to what we want fixed.

Here’s a thread that I’m conflicted about. On one hand it’s highlighting a valid concern about what could happen in the future. On the other hand, (and it took me awhile to realize it thanks to WYgal), it’s not accurate and low key unnecessarily alarmist. x 1/ The Nightmare Scenario SCOTUS is Plotting For the 2024 Election Takeover: — Thom Hartmann (@Thom_Hartmann) July 2, 2022

Thanks once more to WYgal for sharing this tweet that helps me put the whole thing back in perspective. x Moore v Harper was already #1 on our white board headed into next week and this probably cements it. How do you stop this? Elect 2+ (net) Dem Senators THIS YEAR & lift the filibuster to pass election reform w/jurisdiction stripping, including reforming the Electoral Count Act https://t.co/xhYeoYmYva — Opening Arguments (@openargs) July 3, 2022

I’ll close with some encouraging poll and fundraising numbers. I know it’s early, but this should be a very, very tough summer for republicans and that helps our party and country.
