Humming Birds. I had to have heard the name, growing up in so many places that verged on undeveloped natural areas. Only I think by the time I comprehended that the amazing photos and illustrations were potentially real within the realm of my experience, my feeling was that they were something exotic to behold beyond even my hopes. Four leaf clovers. Hitting a hole in one. No philosophy, theology, history or politics. And then one day I saw one, and knew it. A glimmering green point of light beside our pine tree out front, going about its business -- exquisitely hovering, maddeningly dashing, a vanishing act. We've done some planting of flowers a few seasons now, and oh just every oh so briefly -- they come, just outside the window.
