CNN is reporting that former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is calling for an investigation into why the IRS decided to do extensive audits of both he and former FBI Director James Comey’s taxes during the Trump years. Both men were critical of Donald Trump, and as the CNN article notes, the odds of any given person being audited are about 1 in 30,800, making it rather suspect that both McCabe and Comey were both selected entirely at random for an intensive audit. The head of the IRS, Charles Rettig, a Trump appointee, has headed the department since 2018.

"It just defies logic to think that there wasn't some other factor involved," McCabe told CNN's Laura Coates on "Don Lemon Tonight" of his purportedly random selection for the audit, which he characterized as an "incredibly rigorous" and "nerve-wracking" process. "I think that's a reasonable question. I think it should be investigated. People need to be able to trust the institutions of government and so that's why there should be some -- we should dig through this and find out what happened," he continued.

Ironically, Comey’s audit showed that he and his wife had slightly overpaid their taxes, resulting in a $347 refund from the IRS.

You may also recall that McCabe was the guy fired at Trump’s direction by Jeff Sessions just two days before he would have become eligible for early retirement benefits and his planned retirement.

Comey was fired while in Los Angeles and sources say Trump threw a tantrum when he found out Comey was allowed to fly back home to Washington D.C. at government expense instead of having to pay out of his own pocket. Because as we all know, Trump is all about revenge for perceived slights.

The IRS is denying any political motivation for the two audits.
