We are going to destroy our AR-15 [1]

My husband and I are both veterans. My husband is a responsible gun-owner and keeps his weapons unloaded and locked inside a gun safe. He has an AR-15 with a few, normal-capacity magazines. About once a year, he takes it to the range, fires it, cleans it and then puts it away until the following year.
With all the shootings across America, we have started to re-think how we feel about owning an AR-15. We know the destructive power of these kinds of weapons and we have come to the conclusion that having one is not something we desire anymore. We thought about selling it. However, to sell it would mean that it just transfers from one person to another. Every shooting that involved an AR-15 would then leave us wondering if the weapon used was the weapon we sold, and it would be devastating to discover that it was.
So we have decided that destroying it by filling the barrel with Liquid Nails and then surrendering it to the police department for destruction is the right thing for us to do.
In 2012, the weapon was purchased from a gun store in Orange County California for about $700. We could just simply turn it in for destruction. However, we can’t afford to throw money away, and police buy-back programs never give you the full value of the weapon. So, we are asking for donations on GoFundMe to recuperate the value. The money received in this donation will go towards helping to move two veterans from a rental home to a purchased home.
If you are of the opinion that these weapons do not belong in the hands of civilians, then please consider donating to the cause. In return, we will post a copy of the receipt from the police department showing that we have, in fact, turned the weapon in for destruction as well as images of the act of pouring liquid nails into the weapon.
Maybe others will take it upon themselves to do similar actions, and start the process of eliminating these weapons from our streets.
