This is just to point out a spine-chilling article in The New Yorker magazine. July 4th edition. Link Here:
www.newyorker.com/…
Entitled “The Illiberal Order: Does Hungary offer a glimpse of our authoritarian future?
Andrew Marantz traveled to Hungary and found CPAC, Conservative think tanks, GOP congresspeople, Steve Bannon and the usual suspects, plus tons of money. The task: figure out how to appropriate Strongman Viktor Orban’s success in stifling democracy in Hungary and transplant it into the USA. Calling Orban a “Trump before Trump,” they marvel at his ability to diminish the press, corrupt the vote and consolidate power.
Since the only functioning wing of the Republican Party is the Trump Wing (everybody else is like sales support), what they intend to do with what they have found is pretty distressing (for me). It suggests that the GOP is not likely to back down — to go back to the days of GOP subterfuge, but just to plow onward with more precision than Trump allowed.
A paragraph that stuck out. The author interviews a Professor Dessewffy. “I’m sorry to tell you, I’m your worst nightmare” … He was sitting in a placid garden, enjoying a lemonade, wearing cargo shorts … “Even my parents, who lived under Stalin, still drank lemonade, still went swimming in the lake on a hot day, still fell in love. In the nightmare scenario, you still have a life, even if you feel somewhat guilty about it.”
It’s a must read.
