The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns. We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

I shot this crappy video in 2020. I embrace it now for the audio (sticking to that answer). I was looking for Louisiana Waterthrush. I had read they would be in my area and I knew a location where one would likely be. But, I got distracted by this bird instead.

It is unclear, but I could see the bird more clearly and it fit the title I gave it. However, the song is not exactly a complete identifier. Other indicators were there (height of normal perch, environmental setting of small running creek and river cane). When I presented it to the Bucketeers, I got the “nudge”.

For those that haven’t felt the gentle urging to research deeper, it is a non-evasive measure to improve one’s skill.

Two years have passed and with the encouragement from the fine members here, I now have a new video of a Waterthrush. The “bobbing while walking” is a strong indicator of this species, as are the breast stripes and eye liner. There is one question that will muddle the issue. Is that a Swainson’s Warbler singing in the background? I look forward to the nudge.

If you get the chance to visit outdoors and celebrate the 4th of July. I hope your “nudge” will be a useful one.

For those that think they know this tune I offer this {for the birders}.

Let’s not neglect our Bug of the Day. Blue fronted Dancer were near the site where I saw the Waterthrush. The blue did not show as sharply in my photo. But the memory was lasting.

The top two photos are mine. The bottom photo was borrowed to show the deep blue my camera missed.

Happy 4th of July.
