Jan. 6 panel could make multiple criminal referrals of Trump to DOJ, Cheney says

House Jan. 6 committee members said Sunday that they may make criminal referrals to federal prosecutors involving former President Donald Trump and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. [...] Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., the vice chair and one of two Republicans on the panel, said “we’ll make a decision as a committee” about whether to alert the Justice Department to possible crimes it has uncovered . “The Justice Department doesn’t have to wait for the committee to make a criminal referral, and there could be more than one criminal referral,” she said on ABC's "This Week." [...] Asked whether she was worried about prosecuting a former president who may soon announce another presidential bid in 2024, Cheney said: “I have greater concern about what it would mean if people weren’t held accountable for what’s happened here.”
Political observers have noted, that these are strong hints to the DOJ that they should investigate and charge Trump BEFORE the Committee makes its referrals — if the DOJ wants to look independent; if they want to avoid the looking like the DOJ is taking “political sides.”
What happened on January 6th 2021, goes WAY beyond “politics as usual” — it goes to the very heart of our democracy. It violently tried to destroy the “will of the American people” — based on lies, ego, delusions of grandeur.
Failing to hold the insurrection leader(s) to account, will be a failure of the very ideal that America is a country “of, by and for the People” ...
Jan. 6 panel member Schiff says that if DOJ doesn't investigate Trump it sends message presidents are above the law

"I think there's evidence the former president engaged in multiple violations of the law and that should be investigated," Schiff said. [...] "If the department were now to take the position that you can't investigate or indict a former president, then a president becomes above the law. That's a very dangerous idea that the Founders would have never subscribed to." Schiff argued that not investigating someone because of their political status is "far more dangerous thing to our Constitution than following the evidence wherever it leads, including when it leads to a former president."

No one should be above the Law — especially the most powerful person in our system of government. It was true in Nixon’s time. It is even more true now. Woodward and Bernstein say the events of January 6th 2021 are much worse than Watergate. John Dean stated they are 100 times worse than Watergate.

We were on the brink on January 6th 2021. Forty feet away from having a “president declared for life,” as the Trump-incited Mob surged to hang Mike Pence.
If the DOJ refuses to act, based on some naive view of “presidential privilege” — that brink no doubt will be breached, the next time the MAGA Mob has semi-competence leadership to direct them.

Maybe enough will wake-up, to tip the tide BACK to Accountability and the Rule of Law.
Time will tell. And the DOJ too, if they continue to follow the evidence to WHEREVER IT LEADS — even if it leads to the guy who would appoint himself Leader for Life.
THAT is decidedly NOT what America is about — NOT what the Founders had in mind at all, not by a long shot.
