(or any other day).
NRA Posts Appallingly Insensitive July Fourth Greeting Day Of Mass Shooting
As police in Illinois hunted America’s latest mass shooter on Monday, the National Rifle Association left up a tweet crediting “armed citizens” for Independence Day. “The only reason you’re celebrating Independence Day is because citizens were armed,” said the tweet, posted early in the day and still up Monday evening.
We know at least six people who will never celebrate Independence Day again.
A tweet by another lobbying group, the Gun Owners of America, was possibly even more tasteless. “This long weekend brought to you by armed citizens,” gushed the message. The organization either wasn’t aware that other citizens’ holiday weekends had been permanently terminated — or didn’t care.
Are they now in competition for who can be the most clueless? Or careless? If so, they’ve got a new challenger — the Republican nominee for governor of Illinois: ‘Let’s move on and celebrate’: Trump-backed Illinois candidate offers brief thoughts and prayers after Highland Park parade shooting
"The shooter is still at large, so let's pray for justice to prevail," Bailey addd, "and now let's move on and celebrate the independence of this nation. We know the mission, we have got to get corruption and evil out of our government, and we have got to elect men and women of honor and of courage to get this country and this state back on track." He then closed with a prayer on behalf of the families affected by the shooting and law enforcement.
(Though someone with some PR sense must have gotten to him, because he later offered the standard “if anyone was offended” apology.)
No word from SCROTUS yet.
Elsewhere around the nation as we celebrate Independence Day: The attack in Highland Park was not the only shooting over a violent holiday weekend.
Beyond Highland Park and Chicago, four people were injured in a shooting in Kansas City, Mo., and six were injured in a shooting in Richmond, Va. In Philadelphia, two police officers were shot near the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday night. Both officers were transported to the Jefferson University Hospital and are in stable condition, according to the hospital’s media officers. Before that, there were mass shootings over the weekend in Mullins, S.C.; Tacoma, Wash.; Manassas, Va.; Clinton, N.C.; Haltom City, Texas; and New York City.
And we barely noticed.
