One test of self-awareness in animals is whether they recognize that the image in the mirror is actually themselves.
To date, nine non-human species have individuals that have passed the mirror test. This includes Asian elephants, all four groups of great apes, bottlenose dolphins, orcas, Eurasian magpies, and some ants. (!) Young adults are most likely to pass. Human babies usually pass at about 18 months.

Of course, in the wild, animals only encounter their reflections occasionally.
Some of us are pretty sure our pets would pass if tested.
Cats are not on the list. Their reactions are a lot of fun, though.
Puppies, too.
And sometimes, we see what we want to see.
PWBPeeps is a group that posts a daily diary and nightly open thread for animal lovers. We share photos, seek & give advice about pet health and behavior issues, support each other in times of sadness and stress, celebrate together when times are good, and on most days have an inordinate amount of fun.
You are welcome to join us!
