One More Time?!?
Once again it looks like Covid-19 may be embarked on yet another relentless rise here in the US, spurred on by the descendants of the Omicron variant that washed over us last Winter. 3 months ago, as the original Omicron tsunami was receding, we were averaging barely above 200,000 new cases per week, with a Test Positivity Rate (TPR) of just 3%. Now we’re about to exceed 800,000, and the TPR has shot up from 12% to 17% in just the past week — though so many states are no longer reporting this particular bit of data that it’s questionable whether the stat continues to contain any useful info at this point.
Even worse, serious/critical hospitalizations have more than doubled since our April lows, and now appear to be growing at an increasing rate; and even our weekly death toll has stopped its months long decline and appears to be heading back up, albeit at a considerably slower pace than either hospitalizations or new infections.
Unfortunately, neither vaccination status nor even recent prior exposure seems to be conferring all that much protection against new infections — necessitating continued mask wearing and social distancing among even the fully vaccinated if they don’t wish to chance a positive exposure and/or reinfection.
Even more worrisome, though the case fatality rate (CFR) for each new variant has generally been less than the preceding variant due to increased vaccination levels, better standards of care, and lower inherent lethality, this trend may not be holding for the latest Omicron variants — a disturbing number of US states, Canadian provinces, and foreign nations appear to be showing markedly higher CFR’s over the past 3 months relative to last Winter’s original Omicron wave. Hopefully I’ll have a more detailed analysis of this potentially troubling trend in a future diary soon.
Note that none of the Canadian provinces have provided any new updated data this week (just national data via worldometer), so don’t imagine the pandemic has somehow suddenly disappeared from our Northern Neighbor — indeed, they’re seeing an even larger relative rise in their CFR’s than most of the US states.
