It was so hot.
Sweltering. Sweaty. Hot.
“Freddddddddieeeee,” I whined.
His ear twitched.
I had no strength left. I was depleted. Wrung dry. But sweaty. So sweaty.
“You’re like a hot water bottle,” I told him.
He gave the back of his paw a slow lick.
I stretched my arm out to pet him, but could only reach just past the base of his tail. It was not an ideal spot for scritches; he was just as likely to bite me as he was to enjoy it. I went for it anyway.
The muscles of his back rippled in response to the work of my fingers. He did not bite, so languid from the heat he couldn’t be bothered.
My legs burned from his body heat and the sticky warmth of the room. Carefully, trying not to disturb him enough to make him leave, I slowly widened my legs. The strategy was to give him room to sleep without actually touching me.
It worked and he curled up in the space between my calves, somehow taking up most of the foot rest. “I’ve been bamboozled,” I said.
"Are you hot too?” I asked him.
He curled his head so his chin was pointing at the ceiling and his little vampire teeth were visible. He seemed to be smiling. “Pretty comfy, huh?” I asked. “That’s a shame because I’m getting up and turning on the air conditioning.”
I nudged him with my food to warn him that I was closing the foot rest. He stood and stretched (“good stretch!”) and jumped to the ground.
I stood and walked to the thermostat, Freddie following along slowly behind me. I flipped the switch and went back to my seat. As I sat, the cool air began to blow through the vent. I sighed.
Freddie jumped up next to me. “Can I sit on you now?” he asked.
“You can always sit on me,” I said.
“Even when it’s hot?”
I drew in a breath and blew it out. “Even when it’s hot,” I agreed.
“Put your legs up!” he demanded.
“Yes, sir,” I said, and obediently reached for the lever.
We were back as we started, me reclined, him draped over my legs. This time, it was a lot more comfortable.
“Freddie, guess what?” I asked.
“Hmmm?”
“Summer has just started.”
We both groaned.
“I’m just going to sleep through it,” he told me.
“Not on my lap, I hope.”
He thought about it. “Maybe in the linen closet.”
“That’s a good place for a summer hibernation.”
“You’ll have to bring me food.”
“Of course.”
He yawned, showing all his teeth. “This could work.”
“Maybe I’ll hibernate and you’ll bring me food,” I suggested.
He looked toward the back door. “I could probably catch some lizards,” he mused. A bird landed in the feeder and started scratching at the seed. “Birds too.”
“They are tiny feathered ingrates, but I don’t want to eat them.”
“And I’ll be asleep in the linen closet so they’ll be hard to catch.”
“That too.”
We sighed together.
“We should just stay right here for now,” I said.
He rested his head on my ankle. “Definitely.”
Happy Caturday, Peeps! I’m not feeling terribly patriotic, so I figured some lazy lying around was the order of the day. I hope you all have a nice, relaxing holiday weekend.
