I am reading:
End of a Berlin Diary : 1944-1947 by William L. Shirer - Didn’t read a lot of this but what I did read— accounts of the last days in the bunker where Hitler committed suicide— is very dramatic.
Berlin, Monday, November 5 THE FIRST DOCUMENT (October 8, 1945) Summary of Interrogation; The Last Days in Hitler’s Air-Raid Shelter Reitch describes it as a pathetic thing, the picture of a man’s complete disintegration. A comic tragedy of frustration, futility, and uselessness. The picture of a man running almost blindly from wall to wall in his last retreat, waving papers that fluttered like leaves in his nervous, twitching hands, or sitting stooped and crumbled before his table moving buttons to represent his non-existent armies, back and forth on a sweat-stained map, like a young boy playing at war.
Berlin, Thursday, November 8 An interesting chat at noon today with Johannes Becher, the German poet… “it is not these ruins, he said...”that are the worst things about Germany’s present condition. Far worse is the deadness of the German soul. It has been poisoned beyond belief by twelve years of Nazism. Today it has no connection with either our German past— the world of Goethe and Schiller, for example— or with the outside world of the present. And while it is true that everyone is preoccupied with finding shelter, warmth, and food, this cannot excuse the German people for having dead souls and nitwit minds and not the slightest desire to make good their awful crimes or even recognize them for crimes or even think about how Germany eventually can get in step with the rest of the world and its civilization.
T he City We Became by N.K. Jemisin - About halfway finished, Brooklyn has just finished fending off the attack on her family at one of the brownstones that she own. I understand what is happening a little better…
“...Basically, one of the realities out there is not super jazzed that our reality exists. Fuck if I know why— but whatever the reason, something from that reality tries to kill cities whenever they become alive the way New York has just done...”
