Take back the flag

I doubt if this is an original story, but I’d like to encourage Kos people, and Democrats in general, to mark this 4th of July weekend by flying American flags in front of our houses this weekend. There’s a big part of me that’s feeling resistant to that gesture, this weekend of all weekends, after the Supreme Court has thrown so many of us directly in front of buses in pursuit of a most un-Christian “Christian” agenda. I don’t want to do anything that will identify me with “them” right now, and they have so successfully co-opted the flag as THEIR symbol of partisanship and hatred that it hardly feels as though it belongs to me anymore anyway. I’ve been sort of wishing all day that Democrats would adopt Juneteenth as our mid- summer holiday, and let the Republicans have July 4th.



But, you know what? It’s my flag too — I saluted it all through elementary school growing up, teared up when I saw it flying on highway overpasses after 9/11, and have hung it on my front door for countless July 4ths. We Democrats need a movement to RECLAIM THE FLAG, flying it with such passion and determination that when you see an American flag in front of a house you no longer automatically wonder if the home owners would vote for Trump again. I’m hanging my big red, white and blue flag from our second story bedroom window this year, and planting little ones at the end of the drive among the geraniums. I am an American Democrat, and it’s my flag too, even though I do VOTE BLUE!
