The dark purple bar is generation…nice.
It was a tough sell originally to my wife, it was not going to pay back for…..well years; up to at least ten.
Still she let me do the legwork and arrange the installation of solar panels on our home to humor me I suppose….we paid for it up front so it was a big bite and even with the tax incentives it will be at least 10 years till we zero out the costs.
Note the PNW has the cheapest electricity in the nation due to massive Hydro projects of the past (Grand Coulee, Hells Canyon, etc.)
They were installed in November of last year and barely made a dent in the power bill, December and January were barely better…..then the sun started to return and quickly we were generating more energy than we used and gaining KW credits (Idaho power does not buy back excess over a year — no net metering here in Idaho-ho-ho).
As the above snapshot shows for the last 4 months we have exceeded by large amounts generation versus usage and our power bills have been a shocking $6 service and hookup charge….a added plus is the panels reduce our need for AC since they are absorbing a good amount of radiant energy.
Now ours is not the best sighting, west side only due to house orientation and the dormers on the front east side (plus neighbors have a giant Locust tree shading our south roof space)……still we will probably zero out our use versus generation over the year and pay just $70-80 for the entire year. And as long as we zero out the rising cost of power generation will not hit us as far as electricity.
I also view it as a gift to the next owners once we pass on and our small part to mitigate/reduce rapid human caused climate change…
We but borrow this world from our children, grandchildren, and all those who will come after us and we should take care of it.
