First Roe v Wade, next birth control, gay sex and gay marriage!
This is a short diary. Like others, I was furious about SCOTUS overturning Roe v Wade, but when I read what Thomas wrote in a separate opinion, I felt like my head was exploding. “Thomas acknowledged that the Roe v Wade decision does not directly affect any rights besides abortion. But he wrote, “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.”
“The three cases Thomas mentioned are all landmark decisions establishing certain constitutional rights. In Griswold v. Connecticut, the court ruled in 1965 that married couples have a right to access contraceptives. In 2003, the court said in Lawrence v. Texas that states could not outlaw consensual gay sex. And the court’s 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges established a constitutional right to same-sex marriage.”
Yes, Justice Clarence Thomas said we should reconsider the legality of birth control, gay sex, and same-sex marriage.
And, the moment I read what he said, I went to MoveOn and signed the petition to impeach him. I had originally written a longer piece explaining why, but decided to eliminate it. My adult son is gay and I won’t let Thomas and the other miscreants on SCOTUS destroy his life. It’s as simple as that.
I joined 821,922 people on MoveOn, and signed the Impeach Clarance Thomas petition.
Three months ago, there were 100,000 signatures on this petition. Three weeks ago, here were 200,000. Three days ago, there were 400,000. One day ago, there were 600.000. Now there are 821,922. Feel free to join us!
